Peer suggests using neutron bomb in Afghanistan and Pakistan

A Labour former defence minister stunned peers today by suggesting that a neutron bomb could be used to create a "cordon sanitaire" in troubled border regions like the one between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In a Lords debate on multi-lateral nuclear disarmament, Lord Gilbert said the use of such weapons could "greatly reduce problems of protecting those borders".

He added: "These things are not talked about but they should be...."

Lord Gilbert said that what used to be called a neutron bomb, but was actually an enhanced radiation reduced blast weapon (ERRB), could have "many uses" today.

"I think you could use an ERRB warhead to create a cordon sanitaire around various borders where people are causing trouble these days."

He said an example was the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan where no one was living "except a few goats".

Acknowledging his idea might seem "impractical" to peers, Lord Gilbert added: "If you told them there was going to be some ERRB warheads dropped there, it would be a very unpleasant place to go and they wouldn't go there.

"You would greatly reduce your problems of protecting those borders from infiltration by one side or another. These things are not talked about but they should be because there are great possibilities for deterrence in using weapons we've got already."

Lord Gilbert said he was "delighted" that nuclear weapons had been invented because, by acting as a deterrent, they had prevented a possible third world war and helped save lives.

Labour former defence secretary Lord Browne of Ladyton rounded on Lord Gilbert over his remarks, accusing him of being at his "most challenging and contrarian".

Cabinet Office spokesman Lord Wallace of Saltaire said the Government did not share Lord Gilbert's "rumbustious" views on the sensitive issue.

"The UK retains a firm commitment to the long-term goal of a world without nuclear weapons," he said.

"Our aim is to build an international environment in which no state feels the need to possess nuclear weapons - an environment that will allow nuclear states to disarm in a balanced and verifiable manner."

Lord Wallace said there had been continuity from one government to another on the issue, adding: "This is absolutely not an area of partisan disagreement."

The Coalition had agreed two years ago to reduce operationally available warheads to no more than 120, making the UK the "smallest of the nuclear weapons states in terms of the number of operational warheads and missiles".

whats there to comment on? some former official turned weirdo making a stupid suggestion? if he is "stunning" his own party members, i don't think nuking countries will become official policy.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

how about commenting on an article in which says that a military adviser is suggesting dropping Neutron bombs on your country.

maybe you dont know what the effects of a neutron bomb are.

Effects of a neutron bomb detonation
Upon detonation, a 1 kiloton neutron bomb would produce a large blast wave, and a powerful pulse of both thermal radiation and ionizing radiation, mostly in the form of fast (14.1 MeV) neutrons. The thermal pulse would cause third degree burns to unprotected skin out to approximately 500 m. The blast would create at least 4.6 PSI out to a radius of 600 m, which would severely damage non-reinforced structures.[22] At this distance the blast would cause very few direct casualties as the human body is resistant to sheer overpressure, however, the powerful winds produced by this overpressure are capable of throwing human bodies into objects or throwing objects at high velocity, both with lethal results, rendering casualties highly dependent on surroundings.[23] The pulse of neutron radiation would cause immediate and permanent incapacitation to unprotected humans out to 900 m,[3] with death occurring in one or two days. The lethal dose would extend out past 1400 m, where approximately half of those exposed would die of radiation sickness after several weeks.

According to parliament's website he hasn't been a military advisor for over a decade.

Cabinet Office spokesman Lord Wallace of Saltaire said the Government did not share Lord Gilbert's "rumbustious" views on the sensitive issue.

But assume for a moment if this statement was given by a Muslim former military general from any Muslim country, what would be the reaction of the West ?
Just a few days ago, an army guy was hanged for he had murdered another army personnel in Pakistan some years ago. This was the first official death punishment in Pakistan in the last 5 years. Due to the immense pressure by the UNO and EU death punishment was not done in Pakistan in the last 5 years. This guy was hanged because there was some pressure from army because he had killed another army guy. After hanging him, EU and UNO condemned Pakistan for doing such and threatened to put embargo on Pakistan if she continued such in the future, after a few days, Qasab was hanged in India but no one spoke about his punishment even the West appreciated that.
Is this not a pure hypocrisy ?

you are yet again playing dumb.
he is not a nobody but a member of the upper house of british parliament (House of lords),and isnt called "lord " Gilbert for nothing.

dont try to whitey this story.
you claim about europeans being some anti muslim genocidal maniacs is unfounded.Maybe you are negatively influenced by soldat's mis representations.
