  • Afghan Soldiers to be Trained in India

600 Afghan troops to be trained in India and over 100 in Indian Army’s jung

India has agreed to train upto 600 Afghan Army officers every year in India under a pact that President Hamid Karzai is expected to sign with India early next week, highly placed sources have told NDTV.

The program is the first concrete follow-up on military-to-military cooperation under the umbrella of the Strategic Partnership Agreement that was signed between Kabul and New Delhi in 2011 when Afghan President Hamid Karzai was given a grand reception in India.

Under the agreement, India, which has the world’s third-largest army, agreed to train, equip and build the capacity of the Afghan forces.

Sources in the Indian security establishment familiar with the contours of the detailed schedule say Kabul and New Delhi have identified three areas to focus on, namely increasing the intake of officers in India’s premier training institutes; providing specialized training to middle and higher level officers already operating in the Afghan National Army (ANA); and training soldiers in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations.

Over 200 Afghan cadets will be training at the National Defence Academy, the Officers’ Training Academies and the Indian Military Academy every year. This is over and above the 600 serving Afghan National Army (ANA) officers who will undergo a variety of courses.

In addition, company level (100-strong) contingents of ANA will be trained for four weeks at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School located at Vairangte in Mizoram.

NDTV had reported on these plans in December 2011. It has taken almost a year for New Delhi and Kabul to firm up the details.

India however has no plans to send or deploy its troops in Afghanistan as of now.

President Karzai is also likely to sign a pact on allowing India and Indian companies to mine that country’s vast natural resources. Indian companies are planning to invest over 11 bn dollars in the mining sector over the long term in Afghanistan.

New Delhi has also decided to supply vehicles, information technology and sports equipment, a move seen as a paradigm shift in India’s approach to Afghanistan.

So far, India has concentrated on using “soft power” in the development sector, such as helping with the building of roads, hospitals and even the parliament building in Afghanistan. But by offering extensive training facilities for ANA, India has decided to ramp up its involvement, although it’s currently stopping short of supplying any military hardware. New Delhi has also decided not to send training teams to Afghanistan in view of the two attacks on its embassy in Kabul.

The Indian security and strategic establishment has been wary of discussing the Indo-Afghan military-to-military relationship, not least because of Islamabad’s sensitivities. Pakistan sees the growing relationship between New Delhi and Kabul as denying “strategic depth” to its army, and as an Indian attempt to encircle Pakistan.

President Karzai will arrive in Mumbai on Friday and will later travels to Delhi.

Why are you training in an anti-Muslim nation whose armed forces are motivated to fight Muslims with battle cries from Hindu scriptures? Afghans should train with us.

      you are totally right.
Bangladesh is a true friend of AFG and have aways stood with Afghans.

India is like a snake trying to play politics in AFG.

Afghanistan should maintain good relations with all countries, specifically India which can provide it strategic leverage. Obviously Afghanistan, with a proper administration, should always take into consideration it's own strategic interests. There is nothing wrong with ANA being trained in India, Bangladesh, or any other nation, provided that the top brass recognize Afghan national interest.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Are you sure you are not jealous?? You don't even try that hard to cook up something because you know that as soon as you mention Islam or religion, a bunch of idiots would pat you in the back for whatever bs that you present to them.
Soldiers in a battlefield dont exchange religous beliefs that you want afghans trained by super Islamic and religious nations instead. And in case you haven't noticed, the only help we have been offered by our fellow Muslims has come in the form of a suicide bomb jacket.
Muslims all over the world are miserable today because they refuse to acknowledge the rest of humanity as their equals. If you can't relate to another human being on a human to human level, your religion doesn't mean anything.

India is a secular nation with more Muslims than Bangladesh and Pakistan. In fact, it has more Muslims than Bangladesh and Afghanistan combined. Calling it anti-Muslim is not cool. From my experience, Indian Muslims are more patriotic than their Hindu counterparts. They've even had a Muslim president, who truly sacrificed his life to arm his nation to its teeth.

Afghanistan should have good relationship with muslim countries first than a hindu country like india,"india has more muslims" isnt a good argument since the country is 80% hindu.
there is nothing strategic having an agressive country trying to play politics on our soil or to take our resources to become the so called super power.India does not recognise Afghan interest but their own,it is naive to think that india will think about Afghan interest when they are supporters of northern alliance and have bribed tthem into signing pitty deals on Afghan resources.

if it was up to me
i woudl say ,Taliban shoudl train ANA since they are handing multiple well equiped countries behind's to the.
Why should Afghans be trained on the soil of another country, that creates tools.

having more muslims isnt a good argument since china also has such a muslim population, would you be OK with china training ANA?

China isnt preferable since they are opressing Uighur muslims ,the same way indians are opressing kashmiris.
Afghans should have a clear policy and they shouldnt go hand in hand with criminals to achieve their "national interest",the same criminals who oppress our muslim brothers.

doing business is one thing, training military is risky business, especially by those who we ruled ,now seems some of us want them to rule us.
who cares theyve had a muslim president and how some pressurised people are patriotic or not.

                  I agree with Asad71

it is better Afghans to be trained by Bangladesh than India.
Bangladesh has better track record as military trainers, they are our muslim brethern, they dont play politics in our country,we have brotherly history together.

above all they will respect Afghan soldiers religious symbols unlike the indians.

Of course I am. Anyone who wishes to train the Army into competent soldiers should be embraced. Of course having more Muslims is a good argument, cause it proves a lack of awareness in the subject manner.

No need to mix so many issues at once. One can also find some con about Bangladesh and use that same card.

Again, for the 2nd time, anyone who wishes to train Afghan forces into competent soldiers, with respect to AFGHAN NATIONAL INTERESTS is embraced.

but thats not how it works.

if you are training lets say with India.
in return they want something: influence, resources and a market for their indutries(especially cultural/bollywood).

having more muslims isnt a good argument, since we saw the incident they disrespected Afghan religious beliefs and symbols.
so the "they have more muslims" doesnt come into the equasion.

i still think taliban should train ANA ,ANP and they themselves become off duty National Guards, unless by training we mean that they continue to fight against taliban in the future, than unfortunately no training will be helpful.

No,our soldiers never trained in India. We have officers attending various courses in various countries like China, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, S Korea, Turkey, France, Canada, USA, Australia, UK, Germany and others. Similarly all these nations send officers to train in our institutions which are world class. Officer cadets from Bosnia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Palestine and others attend our Military Academy. Bangladesh should be Afghanistan's first choice for defence cooperation.
