Police searching for clue to 40-member gang of criminals

PESHAWAR: The police were on alert all over the provincial capital on Friday to find any clue to the reported group of 40 criminals looting people and raping women after the Peshawar High Court (PHC) took notice of the issue the previous day.

“The station house officers (SHO) of all the police stations concerned have been directed to find out if there is any evidence of the presence of any such group,” a police official said, adding that nothing had been found from any part of the district so far.

The people in a major part of the Peshawar district are terrorised after a reports that a group of armed men have started breaking into houses, looting valuables and raping women. People in several villages have started patrolling after such reports emerged. A number of incidents of heavy firing were also reported from all over the district on suspicion of presence of unknown gunmen.

The Peshawar Police is already under severe criticism for its failure to secure the areas of Badaber and Matani from militant attacks and everyday kidnappings and other crimes. Kidnappers and robbers are also active in Hayatabad, University Road, urban Peshawar and almost all parts of the district.

The new issue of armed gang has further exposed the police performance, especially when the Peshawar High Court expressed the displeasure over the law and order situation in the district. Senior officials of the capital city police earlier termed the report baseless, saying not a single case had so far been reported or found. “We have increased patrolling in these areas but nothing has been found,” insisted an official of the city police.

The Peshawar High Court took notice of the issue on Thursday and directed the police to find the group. The court warned the cops that the relevant superintendent of police, deputy superintendent of police and station house officer would be suspended if any such incident happened in their area.

The villagers in Mathra, Warsak Road, Mullazai, Nasir Bagh, Regi, Pishtakhara, Achini, Spina Warai, Khazana, Chamkani and several other areas are patrolling streets and guarding houses at night to counter such an attack. The issue has spread terror in many rural and suburban areas of the district as some villagers are seen patrolling streets and others guarding houses after the sunset
