Members of the Taliban terrorist group were recently caught in Korea and more are believed to be working here in secret, authorities said Friday, sparking security concerns less than three weeks before the international Group of 20 summit in Seoul.

Intelligence officials recently caught terrorist agents of the Islamist group who were seeking to export strategic weapons to Palestine. The Taliban agents were believed to be working in the country, aware of South Korea’s somewhat slack control on strategic arms exports, authorities said.

“We believe more Taliban agents are in the country and are trying to track them down before the G20 summit,” a security official in Seoul said, asking not to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue.

Working together with Interpol, Seoul authorities confiscated a ship carrying weapons right after it entered Palestine, the official said.

The Taliban, meaning “students,” is an Islamist group that governed Afghanistan from 1996 until it was overthrown in late 2001 by the U.S-led invasion of the country. It has regrouped since 2004 and revived as a strong insurgency movement governing local areas and fighting a guerrilla war against the governments of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Security officials in Seoul are also keeping an eye out for North Korean spies, believing the communist North recently sent its agents to prevent Seoul from successfully hosting the Group of 20 summit.

“We are tracking down organizations who are believed to have received orders from the North Korean government to work on getting a progressive administration to take power in South Korea during the 2012 presidential elections,” an unnamed intelligence official said. “What we are focusing on right now is to arrest terrorists and spies who entered the country recently, ahead of the G20 summit.”

More than 30 heads of state and international leaders will arrive in Seoul for the meeting of the world’s 20 major nations slated for Nov. 11-12.

The upcoming global economic forum is considered the largest and most important international event to be hosted by Seoul since the 1988 Summer Olympic Games, which not only resulted in large financial profit, but also widely promoted South Korea to the international community.
