  • Pakistan mob burns man to death for 'blasphemy'

A Pakistani mob has taken a man accused of blasphemy from a police station and burnt him to death, police say.

The man was being held for allegedly burning a copy of the Koran in public. The incident took place on the outskirts of Bahawalpur, in Punjab province.

Witnesses said hundreds of people looked on as he screamed for help.

Pakistan's controversial blasphemy law imposes the death penalty for insulting Islam, but it is rarely carried out.

The area where the lynching took place is home to hundreds of madrassas - religious schools - run by radical Islamist or sectarian groups.

Police said they detained the man after locals complained that he had desecrated the Koran.

But before the allegation could be investigated, thousands of angry people surrounded the police station, police said.

"They were demanding that we kill him in front of them, or they'll take him away and kill him themselves," police inspector Ghulam Mohiuddin told the BBC.

    'Hysterical'
After officers unsuccessfully tried to calm the crowd, it attacked the station, as police tried to disperse it with tear gas. Several policemen were wounded in the violence.

The mob put up roadblocks to prevent police reinforcements from reaching the area, officers said.

"We were totally outnumbered. There were too many of them and they were hysterical. Eventually, they succeeded in taking him away," said one.

The man was reportedly beaten and dragged to the spot where he is said to have desecrated the Koran.

The mob then poured petrol on him and set him on fire, according to witnesses.

Police say they are trying to identify the victim, who was said to be mentally unstable.

"The man had no idea what was going on," said an official.

"While he was in our custody, he kept laughing and chanting."

A case has been registered against unknown attackers. No arrests have been made yet.

    Pakistani mobs are dangerous.

Killing by fire is against the the Prophet's hadith where he warned people not to burn a human for punishment; that is God's job.

Ali ibn Abi Talib ( may Allah be pleased with him) used to punish apostates by fire, but ibn Abbas (rad) and other disagreed with this.

There are two problems with this incident:

1 - burning people alive is prohibited in Shariah

2 - Mobs are not allowed to punish people.

If Pakistanis are really so passionate about Quran, they should apply Quran on themselves and their country. So that the government can punish people for blasphemy. Because in Islam, the rulers are the ones designated with the duty of applying punishments when the Islamic judge has issued a verdict.

For now Pakistan is a idol worshiping society in denial. This passionate mob is just being stupid.

^ yes, but how do explain this to a society like pakistan? they think they are working for God by doing these acts.

I think Islam needs a new start from the begining in countries like pakistan, there is no Islam there basically

Well, this is what I have been saying here for the past 2 years.

Its not just Pakistan, all muslims are living lives that are very far from Quran & Sunnah.

We cant just claim to be Muslims and behave like smelly idol worshiping Hindus or Godless Europeans.

Islam is not an ethnicity. Its a way of life. If you dont live by what Allah ordains you are not a Muslim.

Like think for your self, he bruned Quran in a area that is full of madrasas and strict religious peopel. Its like one guy In Hollad trew a waccine light at the queens chariot. Later in the news there was an intervieuw whith him and it came to light that his mother passed away, he had lost his job and had fincancial problems, so by trawing the waccin at the queen was his cry for help. And he also sounded really disturbed, when the reporter intervieuwd him.
Meybe the same thing was whith this guy.

And you all call him stupid and what not, you must be really ashamed of yourself.
