The withdrawal of the French contingent from Afghanistan is due to start in a few weeks, French President Francois Hollande announced on Thursday.
He said that all the necessary security measures would be taken during the withdrawal.
The promise to end the deployment of French troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2012 (a year ahead of schedule) was one of the highlights of Hollande’s election manifesto.
Eighty-seven French servicemen have died in Afghanistan since 2001 when the international coalition launched its operation against the Taliban.
