WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - A Chinese immigrant who beheaded and cannibalized a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in western Canada four years ago thought he was attacking an alien, according to a mental health advocate who interviewed him.


In 2009, Vince Li was found not criminally responsible due to mental illness for the death of Tim McLean, a 22-year-old carnival worker who was sitting next to him on a bus traveling near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. McLean had his eyes closed and was listening to music on his headphones when Li suddenly stood up and started stabbing him. As the bus stopped and horrified passengers fled, Li carved up McLean's body, ate portions of it, and displayed the victim's head to some passengers outside the bus.


After the judge's ruling, Li was placed in a locked wing of the Selkirk Mental Health Centre. Initially, he was not allowed outside, but over the years he has gained more freedom. Last week, a Criminal Code review board decided that Li can start having escorted trips off the hospital grounds and into the nearby city of Selkirk.


The ruling sparked renewed outrage from some members of the public, prompting Chris Summerville, head of the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, to conduct a 45-minute interview with Li last weekend with the hope of shedding light on his progress. Summerville has met with Li roughly every two months over the last four years.


"(Li feels) remorse, a degree of humility - I know a lot of people won't believe that - regret and a sense of torment," Summerville said Tuesday. "He understands now that schizophrenia is a mental illness which plays tricks on the brain. He knows that the medication works to keep the voices away."


Summerville released an edited transcript of the interview to the media Tuesday, in which he and Li discuss the night of July 30, 2008, when Li sat on a bus next to McLean that was traveling on a desolate stretch of the TransCanada Highway bound for Winnipeg. Thirty-seven passengers were aboard the bus.


"He was on the lookout for aliens as such, and the voice of God told him that Tim McLean was an alien and he needed to destroy him lest Tim destroy other people," Summerville said.


According to Summerville's transcript, Li recognizes that people fear him.


"I understand people are scared because of my behavior on the Greyhound bus. I am not at risk for anybody. I don't believe in aliens. I don't hear voices," Summerville quoted Li as saying. "I take my medication ... everyday. I am glad to take it. I don't have any weird voices any more."


Li also told Summerville he would like to be forgiven.


"I would do anything for (McLean's) family. I would ask forgiveness, but I know it would be hard to accept," Summerville quoted Li as saying.


That forgiveness may be a tall order.


"I think for the advancement of my own being ... my own soul, I will have to come to a place of accepting," Carol DeDelley, McLean's mother, said Tuesday.


"But what would be unforgivable for me would be ... to not do anything to try to prevent this from happening again by the same perpetrator. I don't think Vince Li can be trusted to take his medication."


DeDelley wants Li kept in a mental hospital permanently, but expects that he will gain more freedom every year until he is eventually released.


"If he's not responsible for his own behavior, then the state, the government, must step in and be responsible for him for the rest of (his) natural life."


Li emigrated to Canada from China in 2001 and became a Canadian citizen four years later.

Vince Weiguang Li has been charged with second-degree murder
A young man beheaded in a savage knife attack on a Canadian cross-country bus has been identified by friends as a "bubbly" 22-year-old man.

Canadian police have not yet formally confirmed the victim's identity, but friends paid tribute on Facebook and in e-mails to Canadian media.

One told broadcaster CBC that Tim McLean, the presumed victim, was loved by many and called him a "ladies man".

Police have charged Vince Weiguang Li, 40, with second-degree murder.
Mr Li, of Edmonton, Alberta, appeared in court in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, on Friday.

He said nothing when the judge asked whether he was going to use a lawyer, merely nodding when asked whether he was exercising the right not to speak.

The judge said Mr Li should appear in court on Tuesday after he had had an opportunity to speak to a lawyer.

Well-loved

Newly-established Facebook groups and Tim McLean's Myspace page have filled with messages of support for the victims' family after news of the horrific killing.

Eyewitnesses on board the bus, which was travelling through a desolate stretch of Canada's vast prairies, said the victim was stabbed 50 or 60 times by the man sitting next to him.

The attacker then severed his head with a large knife, reportedly brandishing the head to terrified passengers.

In an e-mail to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, a friend of Tim McLean, Jossie Kehler, told of her sadness.

"He has a lot of friends and they are all very upset he's gone, and they would like to say they miss him and he will always be in their hearts," she wrote.

On Facebook, news of the killing led to hundreds of friends and well-wishers joining a tribute group.

The site description read: "RIP Tim McLean, you are loved and you will be missed dearly! That man will pay for what he did! We love you!"

'No rage'

The attacker was arrested after a lengthy standoff with police late on Wednesday night.


Police say they do not know what may have provoked the attack
One passenger, Garnet Caton, said many of the 37 passengers saw the attacker "cutting the guy's head off and pretty much gutting him up".
The attacker ran at them, Mr Caton said, and they ran out of the bus, holding the door shut to prevent him getting out.

The attack appeared to be unprovoked and it is thought the killer did not know his victim.

The passengers, many of whom were badly shaken by what they witnessed, were taken to a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, and were given crisis counselling.

I imagine the Chinese guy must have glared at this poor guy whose eyes had been shut for quite a while and then all of a sudden started stabbing him because he thought the guy was an alien. You guys don't find that funny??

A CANNIBAL killer suspected of eating a round-the-world yachtsman was being hunted by police last night.
Guide Henri Haiti is believed to have killed German Stefan Ramin, 40, and eaten him.
Stefan’s remains were discovered in the embers of a campfire on the island of Nuku Hiva in the Pacific Ocean.
The yachtsman’s girlfriend, Heike Dorsch, 37, said she escaped from the guide after he chained her to a tree and sexually assaulted her.
Stefan, a former business adviser from Haselau in northern Germany, was on a worldwide sailing tour with Heike when they visited the French Polynesian island.
Reports in Germany said they stopped off at Nuku Hiva in their catamaran on September 16 and Stefan went missing when he went on a goat hunt with Haiti.
Heike went looking for him after the guide told her: “There’s been an accident. He needs help.”
But instead of helping her find Stefan, he is said to have taken her captive and put her through a sex ordeal. Hours later, she managed to escape and alerted the authorities.
Stefan had been missing for a week when the police found his remains in a remote valley. Bones, teeth and melted fillings were also found in the campfire ashes.
Moby **** author Herman Melville claimed he was once captured by a tribe of cannibals on Nuku Hiva. He escaped before they could eat him.

The search for a suspected cannibal on a French Polynesian island ended Monday when he gave himself up to police.
Henri Haiti, 31, is accused of killing German tourist Stefan Ramin, 41, who went missing on the island of Nuku Hiva in October. Ramin was on an around-the-world sailing trip with his girlfriend, Heike Dorsch.
Charred remains and scattered clothes believed to be Ramin's were found by police after he went out hunting with Haiti. All that was left of a person who'd been "hacked to pieces and burned" was teeth and bone fragments, investigators said.
Haiti showed up at his father's home this week and told him to call police, reports the Daily Mail.
He'd stayed a step ahead of the law for nearly two months, as they found makeshift camps he'd set up and buildings he'd broken into to steal food, the report says.
"In the end, the pressure of the hunt was too much for him," local prosecutor Jose Thorel is quoted as saying in the paper.
Nuka Hiva, an island best known for its use in the book Moby ****, has a history of cannibalism, though it's reportedly no longer practised.

Hans Ulrich Rudel, a Swiss politician and convicted murderer, is now accused of putting out an ad to attract potential cannibals interested in eating his pal's wife and 12-year-old daughter.
The Local reports that Rudel, who co-founded the Embrachertal branch of the Conservative Party, is accused of putting the ad out in 2010 in an effort to get his friend's wife "out of the way" during an ugly divorce.
The ad said the mother and daughter were "keen to meet gentlemen interested in slaughter and dolce who would like to roast us on a spit." "Dolce," as Rudel allegedly told police, was his word for cannibalism.
The Daily Mail reports that Rudel received dozens of responses to the ad, but the person he replied to turned out to be an undercover cop.
"There are a lot of cannibals out there," he said before being sentenced, according to the Mail.
Rudel's trial comes almost exactly one year after The Local previously reported on another Swiss man involved in a cannibal conundrum.
This time, it was a Swiss man who agreed to be eaten by a Slovak cannibal, but the man changed his mind before he could be consumed.
