Pakistani doctor who helped find Bin Laden gets 33 years in prison

    May 23, 2012 | 7:05 am

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A Pakistani doctor who led a phony vaccination campaign aimed at helping the CIA pinpoint Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts was convicted of treason Wednesday and sentenced to 33 years in prison, a decision that is likely to further erode Washington’s fragile relations with Islamabad.
The U.S. has been seeking the release of Shakeel Afridi ever since his arrest by Pakistani authorities after the secret U.S. commando raid that killed the Al Qaeda leader in his compound in the military city of Abbottabad a year ago. In January, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta told CBS’ "60 Minutes" that Afridi had provided intelligence that assisted the raid and criticized Pakistan’s arrest of someone involved in helping track down the world’s most wanted man.
From the start, however, Pakistani authorities have regarded Afridi as a traitor and have ignored Washington’s calls for his release. He was tried in a tribal court in the Khyber region along the Afghan border, where he once was designated the chief surgeon.
Under Pakistani law, he could have been given the death penalty. In addition to the 33-year term, Afridi was also fined about $3,500.
The phony hepatitis B vaccination scheme was aimed at obtaining DNA evidence from Bin Laden’s residence, a sprawling, three-story compound down the road from the Pakistani military’s version of West Point and just a two hours’ drive from the capital, Islamabad. DNA samples would have allowed U.S. authorities to compare that evidence with DNA from Bin Laden relatives on file in Washington.
Afridi and his team of healthcare workers were unable to obtain DNA samples from the Bin Laden compound, but Panetta told "60 Minutes" that he provided information to the CIA that was “very helpful.”
However, Afridi’s vaccination ruse has also severely hampered the work of numerous Western aid organizations in Pakistan that report being harassed by the country's intelligence agents, who have grown suspicious of their affiliations. Some aid groups have reported difficulties in getting visas renewed for their Pakistan-based workers, while others say they are under constant surveillance by authorities or have had workers detained.

Any Pukhtun that works against the establishment gets abducted, which is euphemized as jail. In reality, it's torture central.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Frankly from a Pakistani perspective- at least a liberal Pakistani's perspective it would have been an utmost honor to have the blood of bin laden on our hands. We wished to take him down and we would have wanted an opportunity to kill him. But by him helping US take him down he dishonoured us and did not let us have the opportunity.

Plus Shakil Afridi has done a great disservice to Pashtuns. In Pakhtunkhwa there is already the problem of polio and the taliban are clearly going to use this to score points. No conservative family will be willing to let their child have drops of the medicine in the fear that it is a CIA attempt to frame them for terrorism or make their people infertile.

This isn't an attempt against Pashtuns. In fact Pashtuns in Pakistan are fully supporting this. He is a traitor to Pashtuns who has left thousands of problems for the Pakistani Pashtun.

Fraud, corruption, theft, bribery etc are very easy to do in Pakistan but putting hands in apparantly simple jobs for easy money in which secret agencies are involved, can cost ones life. This idiot docter's greed drowned him.

It is very doubtful that he was aware of what he was doing when he ran the fake vaccination program. From the US perspective, it would have been too risky to let him in on the specific details as to the reasons he was running the vaccination program.

It appears that he was simply paid to run this program with the help of some NGOs, and that he was told nothing, and he was not allowed to ask questions.

In that case, this case is hazy.

In any case, some legit NGO's are now suffering because of this.

You are spot on Zama Pukhtun Wrora. Dr. Shakil Afridi that helped eliminate one of the worst terrorists of history with the blood of so many Afghans, Puktoons, and other innocent humans on his hands and a continuing threat to the world has been convicted by an Al-Qaueda court ( labeled tribal court to deceive the world)set up by the ISI (read PSI i.e. Punjab Services Intelligence).

Dr. Shakil Afrid is a Puktoon hero.

The dark Ranjit Singhi force/people (of whom Talal and hvsultan are the members) are enraged as to why did Dr Afridi expose their dark deceptive faces to the world and deprived them of the hen that laid golden eggs ($$$s at rate of terror). What Afridi did was to leave Pakistan (also Paki patriots like Talal and hvsultan ) stigmatized and isolated in the world----so the anger at him. Bravo Afridi. Your name will live on even if they eliminate you physically.

He was a doctors and doctors are not that naive and simple-minded. Any how people should be careful. Any of you guys should be careful while in pakistan during calls. I mean you guys may be saying some anti-pakistani stuff and the words for instance "dhaalkhor" may beep in their recording room and next time you would be wondering where the heck i am. ISI has access to all mobile networks of pakistan.

haviZSultan, my Indic friend say something that makes sense----Dr Afridi has done great service to Pastuns/Afghans by helping to bring to justice the person who was responsible for killing so many Afghans/Pashtuns . And don't disguise your own humiliation and that of your Indic compatriots that this brave Pashtun exposed with concerns for Pashtuns.

Actually if Pakistan is really sincere to war on terror then they should'nt be angry at shakeel afridi. The osama house is right next to army cantt and abbotabad is full of ISI spies. So it is safe to say that army/ISI was hiding Osama. They are playing double game with america and america knows it but is quiet?
