No, Pakistan cannot maintain its influence in Afghanistan. Pakistan is a necrophilic state. It preys on the dead. It used the American war in Afghanistan to further its aims of Punjabi domination of Kabul and after the Soviet withdrawl, after 1989, it preyed on the fact that all the institutions of the Afghan State were ruined and destroyed. Pakistan stopped all efforts by Dr Najibullah to foster national reconciliation between the various Afghan factions. Punjab thus got an opportunity to extend it's regime to Kabul and hopefully via Kabul to Central Asia.
Also the fact is that the Pakistani state is and has been supported by the imperialists for their aims. Without them Pakistan is a mixture of contradictions and fault lines.
