Pakistan Hindu girl sent to protective custody amid conversion row

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court today directed police to take into protective custody a 19-year-old Hindu girl and her Muslim husband, amid allegations that she was abducted and forcibly converted to Islam. Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwa of the Sindh high court, who was hearing the case of Rinkle Kumari, ordered police to take the couple into protective custody till March 26.

Rinkle's relatives have said that she was kidnapped and forcibly converted before being married off to Naveed Shah. They have asked authorities to allow the girl to go back to her family.

However, Rinkle told the media in Karachi yesterday that she converted of her own free will and adopted the name Syeda Faryal Bibi before marrying Shah. The high court had summoned the couple along with their lawyer.

Some members of Rinkle's family too were present in the court during the hearing.

The judge considered the possibility of sending Rinkle to the Darul Aman, a state-run women's home, but finally directed police to take the couple into custody and to provide security to them. A bench of the supreme court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had on March 8 directed authorities to produce three Hindu girls who were allegedly kidnapped, including Rinkle, in court on March 26

This is good news. At least the government is doing something. Its sad how Hindus are being treated in Pakistan

The Kidnapping and conversion of Rinkle Kumari


Rinkle Kumari is a 17 year old Hindu girl from Mirpur Mathelo in Sindh, Pakistan. She was kidnapped on the 23rd of February, 2012 from her house by Naveed Shah and his gunmen.
Rinkle was taken to Barkandi Shareef a village near Mirpur Mathelo where a local Minister, named Mian Mithoo (From the PPP) conveyed to her she had to convert to Islam to save her parents life.

While this was taking place, Rinkle's family went to the police station to register a complaint which the police registered only after persuasion of five hours. The family was told the court would be held the next day, but they weren't told the right time. Then they were waiting at the court at Ghotki but when they came to know the court would be held in Mirpur Mathelo they rushed there. However they were not allowed to go in by Mian Mithoo's armed entourage.

In the court Rinkle denied converting and cried and begged to be allowed to go with her parents. However Mian Mithoo slapped her in front of the Judge who adjourned the court for two days. On 27th February the new judge gave a ruling in favour of Naveed Shah saying the only house of Rinkle is now Naveed Shah. He took her away to Barkandi Shareef then and married her.

This is how the Hindus suffer in Pakistan. Despite being a significantly richer community than the Muslims and better off than them there has been no let up in violence against Hindus. Rinkle's abduction and forced conversion needs to be condemned forcefully by Pakistanis.

This is the truth about Rinkle's case. And people claim she converted of her own will. We cannot let minorities be mistreated in our country. They deserve better.
