  • "Karachi" protests for Mahajir province

KARACHI: Politically fuelled movements for the creation of Hazara and Seraiki provinces have emerged in recent months. The latest to join the fray are the Mohajir Sooba Tahreek (MST), a movement calling for the creation of a separate province in Sindh for the Mohajir people.
The group made its official debut at a protest at the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday, March 6. But unlike the dozens of protests that take place outside the press club on a daily basis, this was marked by anonymity and little clarity.
Those at the protest were reluctant to discuss their demands, and anyone trying to do so was asked to hold their tongues by men whose eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses.
“Our ancestors sacrificed for the creation of Pakistan and what we are given today? We just want our own province and nothing else,” one man told reporters. While he wanted to talk at length, another angry man pushed him back and whispered into his ear.
“At least we should have our own chief minister,” another protester said, but a couple of men took him away.
The emergence of the MST, coupled with graffiti that has popped up recently across the city demanding the creation of a Mohajir province, has inevitably raised questions about the group’s origins. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was born as the Mohajir Qaumi Movement from the sense of discrimination the Mohajir community faced in Karachi. But the MQM denies it has anything to do with the movement, even though text messages advertising the protest came from members of the party. The MQM has supported the creation of a Hazara and Seraiki province, and moved legislation in the National Assembly on the issue, which sparked a row when Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, questioned the MQM’s motives. The MQM has also moved legislation for the deletion of Article 239 (4) from the constitution, which deals with the assent needed to create new provinces. That move has met with consternation from nationalist parties in Sindh, who have turned against the PPP for not opposing the MQM’s proposal at the outset.
One man, who was distributing placards and posters, also refused to share his name. “I am from Liaquatabad and our organisation is the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and I belong to unit 158 of the MQM. We are with the MQM and Altaf bhai till our last breath but our leaders are unaware of this protest,” he said. He told The Express Tribune that the protesters were demanding a separate province because Mohajirs are not given any share in government jobs and are discriminated against at educational institutions. “The Awami National Party’s (ANP) men don’t allow us to get an education and jobs in Karachi while nationalist parties are hindering our ways in rural Sindh,” he said.
“It is our right,” a young man in his thirties said. “We’ll take revenge,” he said, and disappeared into the crowd.
“We want our own province. There can be no other compensation. We have been tortured, humiliated and killed for years,” was the impassioned plea of a young attendee.
Pamphlets were being distributed on the street corners by men who directed the protesters not to speak to anyone. “Just chant slogans,” he instructed attendees.
“We need the Mohajir province in Sindh,” said one. “Everyone is demanding provinces, why not us? You can’t imagine how people will join us… but this is not a protest for today. Such protests will be organised in the days ahead. If rulers can’t understand our issues they should leave us alone.”

It's a bad idea, it will only create hatred between sindhis and muhajirs, they can't divide sindh and sindhi land and make their own province

^ yeah right, it's not like india will take 14 million people. Also over all as a urdu speaker I must say muhajirs dont have that bad in pakistan, at least compared to other people like sindhis and baloch or even pashtuns, sure there is discrimination outside Karachi even I have felt discrimination when I went to punjab, but with in karachi most of the things are run by muhajirs themselves, so I dont understand why are they complaining. If any thing they should try to make muhajirs as part of mainstream pakistani society rather then just people of karachi

There is no reason for the Mohajirs to complain. All of this bull**** is coming straight from the terrorist, tyrannical MQM which has been killing innocents ever since its creation.

There is no need or want of a separate province by the Urdu speakers. The MQM is just trying to create that demand. This party should be banned.

By the way what is the problem. The Urdu speakers dominate Karachi, they are the richest and most literate, have the highest paying jobs, they form the government of the province and rule Karachi with an iron hand.

What makes you think they want to go to India or did you dream that up?

Provinces must be made on administrative basis if so much necessary not on ethnic basis ..
Anyways, as discussed already this isn't practical for a country like Pakistan.

As far as I know their numbers in government jobs in the province is actually very small. for example much of the police in karachi is actually punjabi, their not even sindhi, let alone urdu speakers. Of course Urdu speakers almost have no presence in the army, which is actually good, but what i am saying is, there is discrimination coming from the federal government side. Also the quota system has been really damaging, a lot of deserving people haven't been able to go to universities/colleges because of this. But that said, much of the private sector of karachi is urdu speaker owned and yes because of that certain classes of Urdu speakers are very rich and affluent. But it's a misconception though that urdu speakers are rich and literate overall, remember there were lots of migrations of muhajirs coming from India, and there are many poor areas of Karachi which are also dominated by muhajirs. For example my dad's side family when they were growing in the 60's, they didn't have a roof on their heads, they grew up in a very poor area of Korangi in Karachi

This is true, it will only create more ethnic problems. I think they need to demand equal wealth distributions

Wrong Sir, very wrong. Go to any govt institute you will find the Urdu speakers there. They are there in Inter-Board Office to Karachi University. They are there in Water Board .. They are everywhere !!

Punjabi? My lord .. Do you have any ratios? Or you are talking nuts? I've seen them there .. Probably not on high seats but they are there on the lower posts .. And Sindhi and Pakhtuns are also there .. So you can't say that in Karachi mostly the Police is comprised of Punjabis?

It's because they don't apply. Pakistan Army is the only institution where you can join without a refrence on your personal ability. Open Marit. Urdu speakers aren't there because they don't apply .. Though I've seen a few but the percentage is extremely low. To add further why you think it is good?

Your information of the quota system is very much incorrect. To apply to any of the govt institute of Karachi you need the PRC of Karachi not even Sindh only Karachi.. Only than you're allowed .. So if you ask me it is good for Urdu speakers rather than being bad

Are you a Punjabi proper (Punjabi from Punjab) or a Punjabi general ( Punjabi by extension i.e., a Kashmiri, a Hindku-speaker, or to a certain degree a Siraiki) that the reference to the Punjabi-heaviness of Karachi police has irked you so much?

True, there may be a little sprinkling of Urdu-speakers, Sindhis, and Pashtuns in Karachi Police but most of its workforce in the officer cadres as well as the lower ranks is Punjabi just like Ranjers is a Punjabi institution.

Paki Army also is one of the most corrupt institutions of Pakistan.

The truth is Sindh police is that they are mostly sindhi. The second largest group is the Punjabis. The problem with being in the Sindh police is that Mohajirs don't really like jobs they consider menial and too small for them. But the MQM has constantly demanded that the police in Karachi be taken from Karachi, not from interior Sindh from where it is currently recruited.

Also Karachi is wrong about the army. Though I admit the lower ranks are not mohajir, the Urdu speakers have a heavy role in the Officer ranks. Musharraf was one such officer and there are many others. The officers are almost completely Punjabi and Mohajir.
