Coke and Pepsi alter recipe to avoid cancer warning label

Studies have not linked the chemical to cancer in humans, the American Beverage Association says
Coca-Cola and Pepsi are changing the recipes for their drinks to avoid putting a cancer warning label on the bottle, to comply with California laws.
The new recipe for caramel colouring in the drinks has less 4-methylimidazole - a chemical which California has added to its list of carcinogens.
The change to the recipe has already been introduced in California.
But the companies say rolling out the new recipe across the US makes the drinks more efficient to manufacture.
"While we believe that there is no public health risk that justifies any such change, we did ask our caramel suppliers to take this step so that our products would not be subject to the requirement of a scientifically unfounded warning," Coca-Cola representative Diana Garza-Ciarlante told the Associated Press news agency.
The chemical has been linked to cancer in mice and rats, according to one study, but there is no evidence that it poses a health risk to humans, said the American Beverage Association, which represents the wider industry.
The US Food and Drug Administration claims a person would need to drink 1,000 cans of Coke or Pepsi to take in the same dose of the chemical that was given to the animals in the lab test.
Coca-Cola and PepsiCo account for nearly 90% of the fizzy drink market, according to one industry tracker, Beverage Digest.

I think its over-interpretation. 4-methylimidazole has been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans along with other substances (in a 5-level scale: carcinogenic to humans, probably carcinogenic to humans, possibly carcinogenic to humans, not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans and probably not carcinogenic to humans). Aflatoxines present is peanuts, almonds, grains etc are carcinogenic to humans and no one cares about daily level consumption.
If California cares so much about health issues, why you can still buy cigarettes there?

No, I don't drink coca-cola or pepsi. I also do not support these concerns in any way.
But for sure I am opposed to falsifications of the facts.

There was a conspiracy against Mountain Dew back when it was launched in Pakistan that the men who will have Mountain Dew will be unhealthy sexually.

^ Here lies the problem ..

We say that one should not buy their products.. Let me give you an example .. Who would like to buy 'Tibbet Soap' instead of 'Lux/Safeguard' etc etc ?? Would you like to buy one?

Come with a product the market is open .. Make a standard product and the people will buy it

I see more people at Chief Burger in Pekhawar than at other places why? Because Chief has maintained it's quality Simple

Yes, kind of expert - cancer epidemiology was my profession. Plus, such data is not hidden. List of carcinogens is available in internet and no, I don' mean wikipedia
About aflatoxines in peanuts, almonds, grains - yes it is true, these mycotoxines grow well in certain nuts and grains.
If you have time you can read about nitrosamine in processed food...

I need to know, how does this work ? I mean, can you explain the process of how those molecules create cancer ?

Je voudrais le plus de détails possible sur le fonctionnement : comment et pourquoi certaines molécules peuvent influer sur les trucs qu'il y a dans les noyaux cellulaires ?

Also, I've heard that when you grill steak too hard and there is black layer of burned meat, then it is carcinogen, is that true ? I even heard a comparaison between eating 1cm of black layer which is the equivalent of smoking 10 packs of cigarette ? How accurate is this ?

J'ai un cousin docteur et quand on va au resto, il nous dit toujours que la mayo et le ketchup c'est cancerigène mais il s'en fout royalement...

Ketchup? As I remember ketchup = processed tomatoes and processed tomatoes are good source of lycopene, one of antioxidants...

It's true what you wrote about fried/grilled/burnt food. But hey, if you eat it from time to time, nothing will happen. Sense of measure it is something what can prevent us from many diseases.
On the other hand certain exposures are unavoidable, like exposure to radon which is in plants, soil etc.

If you want to read more about I would recommend few websites:
                      www.iarc.fr - WHO agency for cancer research - go to databases section;
www.pubmed.org - list of biomedical literature. Abstracts are almost always available and sometimes whole papers, just type what you want to know and you will have list of publications with abstracts. You know math so you will understand all statistical terms like odds ratio, confidence intervals etc.
www.cancer.gov - website run by National Institute of Health/National Institute of Cancer in the USA

when I was in saudi arabia, I use to drink 5 cans of pepsi there daily, not even diet pepsi, regular pepsi. Pepsi and other pops are cheaper then water there, so most people drink pops there instead of water

But obviously these sort of things have taken a huge toll on the health there, even so many young people there have diabetes and other diseases. I am glad I got out of there in time, or else I probably would have been in such bad shape with terrible health
