Let the wedding bells ring!
Washington is expected to become the seventh state to allow gay marriage after its Senate passed a bill allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed on Wednesday.
It's now headed to Gov. Chris Gregoire who has repeatedly said she will sign it into law.
The debate over the bill, which passed with a 28-21 vote on Wednesday night, was fraught with emotion at times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, as state Senators spoke about their own experiences.
"I am proud to stand on the right side of history and vote for marriage equality and I am proud to stand for my father," said Democratic state Sen. Kevin Ranker, whose father is openly gay, according to the newspaper.
Three Republicans crossed party lines to vote for gay marriage.
"I believe an adult should be able to marry the person they love. It's that simple for me," Republican state Sen. Steve Litzow said, according to the Post-Intelligencer.
Opponents of the bill have vowed to file a challenge, which would require them to turn in 120,577 signatures by June 6. If they cannot gather enough signatures, couples can start planning their summer weddings beginning on that day.
Washington joins New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia which all allow same-sex marriage.
