  • Ancient Jewish scrolls found in north Afghanistan

KABUL (Reuters) - A cache of ancient Jewish scrolls from northern Afghanistan that has only recently come to light is creating a storm among scholars who say the landmark find could reveal an undiscovered side of medieval Jewry.
The 150 or so documents, dated from the 11th century, were found in Afghanistan's Samangan province and most likely smuggled out -- a sorry but common fate for the impoverished and war-torn country's antiquities.
Israeli emeritus professor Shaul Shaked, who has examined some of the poems, commercial records and judicial agreements that make up the treasure, said while the existence of ancient Afghan Jewry is known, their culture was still a mystery.
"Here, for the first time, we see evidence and we can actually study the writings of this Jewish community. It's very exciting," Shaked told Reuters by telephone from Israel, where he teaches at the Comparative Religion and Iranian Studies department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The hoard is currently being kept by private antique dealers in London, who have been producing a trickle of new documents over the past two years, which is when Shaked believes they were found and pirated out of Afghanistan in a clandestine operation.
It is likely they belonged to Jewish merchants on the Silk Road running across Central Asia, said T. Michael Law, a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at Oxford University's Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
"They might have been left there by merchants travelling along the way, but they could also come from another nearby area and deposited for a reason we do not yet understand," Law said.
"SOLD ELSEWHERE FOR TEN TIMES MORE"
Cultural authorities in Kabul had mixed reactions to the find, which scholars say is without a doubt from Afghanistan, arguing that the Judeo-Persian language used on the scrolls is similar to other Afghan Jewish manuscripts.
National Archives director Sakhi Muneer outright denied the find was Afghan, arguing that he would have seen it, but an advisor in the Culture Ministry said it "cannot be confirmed but it is entirely possible."
"A lot of old documents and sculptures are not brought to us but are sold elsewhere for ten times the price," said advisor Jalal Norani, explaining that excavators and ordinary people who stumble across finds sell them to middlemen who then auction them off in Iran, Pakistan and Europe.
"Unfortunately, we cannot stop this," Norani said. The Culture Ministry, he said, pays on average $1,500 for a recovered antique item. The Hebrew University's Shaked estimated the Jewish documents' worth at several million dollars.
Thirty years of war and conflict have severely hindered both the collecting and preserving of Afghanistan's antiquities, and the Culture Ministry said endemic corruption and poverty meant many new discoveries do not even reach them.
Interpol and U.S. officials have also traced looted Afghan antiquities to funding insurgent activities.
In today's climate of uncertainty, the National Archives in Kabul keep the bulk of its enormous collection of documents -- some dating to the fifth century -- under lock and key to prevent stealing.
Instead reproductions of gold-framed Pashto poems and early Korans scribed on deer skin, or vellum, are displayed for the public under the ornate ceilings of the Archives, which were the nineteenth century offices of Afghan King Habibullah Khan.
"I am sure Afghanistan, like any country, would like to control their antiquities... But on the other hand, with this kind of interest and importance, as a scholar I can't say that I would avoid studying them," said Shaked of the Jewish find.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

unfortunately Afghanistan's national treasures have been looted and sold in foreign countries by ordinary people and warlords and criminals. I can't blame ordinary people as they have to survive and their survival is more important than ancient relics. But something has to be done about these organized criminals.

I really hope they don't destroy it because it's Jewish. It's not the ordinary man's responsibility to look after it so it shouldn't come between their survival and the well being of treasures. They have people who get paid a great chunk of money by the government to look after this stuff and they stil fin the need to sell it off. That is still no where half as sad as when they destroy it.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

America and Britain really want to help Afghanistan right?. The documents are located in England at the minute and are clearly known to be taken out of Afghanistan illegally - Theses antiques are blatently illegal in the U.K by default, shouldnt the Afghan government request the documents back.

Goverment pays about ~$1500 -- while foreigners are willing to dish out ~$1-2million. That's where the problem arises.

            Manzareh Khan,
That's exactly what I was thinking about. Why isn't the west returning these documents?

well they can't destroy them since they have been smuggled out of Afghanistan and are in England.
I am not saying ordinary people should be held responsible for their protection at all. I tried to say that ordinary people who are poor and have no jobs with hungry kids, shouldn't be blamed if they try to sell and smuggle these artifacts. But the organized gangs and criminals who have made an industry out of smuggling historical artifacts should be punished.
The money set aside for their protection by the government and international donars doesn't reach to those who are supposed to protect it. instead the top guys just pocket that money, ofcourse than the ordinary workers will resort to selling them illegally when they see such corruption. Its governments responsibility to protect national treasures not poor people who need money for survival.

Because Afghanistan is controlled by the west now.

maybe they shouldn't allow them to dig it out anymore. It's more safe under the ground than it is discovered. That's sad.

the digging is done illegally sometimes by organised criminal gangs and sometimes ordinary people. I read a while a go they were selling Greco/Batrian artifacts on Ebay, lol national treasures being sold on Ebay.

                      @Admin Khan,

Exactly i mean when a criminal escapes U.K and the government manages to locate the criminal it usually gets the criminal back regardless of anything, im not too familiar with all the laws and policeys but surely its a similar scenario with items, and that would mean Afghanistan has full rights to taking back what is rightfully theirs, especially with the stance that the west have of helping the Afghan nation. The fact that tourism and such (people coming to see ancient artifacts) is a primary tool in reconstructing the country.

yeah, British museum and museums across the western world are filled with treasures they stole during colonial era. The stole the Egyptian Sphinx, kohi noor and other such treasures. Their excuse is that they are more safe and appreciated. so the people who produced these works of arts can't appreciate them. how did they come up with it if they couldn't appreciate them. they think everyone is stupid and barbaric except them.

don't hold your breath to await the return of stolen antiquities. it took about 20 years of hassling, for the australian aboriginals to get their ancestors bones returned to them, from england.
