Missing student left frantic voice mail before she disappeared
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - A frantic voice mail left by a now-missing 19-year-old college student has her family desperate to find answers.
Aisha Khan, a student at Johnson County Community College, was last heard from shortly before noon on Friday, Dec. 16. She was last seen on the University of Kansas Edwards Campus at 12600 Quivira Road in Overland Park.
Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said Monday afternoon that Khan’s disappearance is classified as a missing case, but police are devoting resources typical of an abduction case.
Searchers said they haven't slept much during the last 48 hours and said the voice message Khan left just before she disappeared has motivated them to keep going.
Khan's older sister, Faiza, said Khan was sitting on a bench on campus studying for a final that she was supposed to take later that day when a stranger approached and assaulted her.
Faiza said Khan tried calling her sister but had to leave a voice message.
"Oh my gosh. It was so scary," Khan said in her voice message. "My heart is like pounding. I've never got this scared in my life."
Faiza checked her voice message a few minutes later and tried calling her sister back, but Khan never answered.
Faiza went to the campus and found her sister's phone, book bag and iPod, but found no sign of her sister.
"It's unbelievable," Faiza said. "I feel like we are dreaming, and the dream is not ending. Everyone is praying. It's scary. I hope she's fine wherever she is. I hope she's safe. I hope she's alive."
The search party for Khan spent all day Sunday putting up fliers, canvassing wooded areas and praying.
Khan's uncle, Adil Sheikh, is leading the search party and said the support from the community has been comforting. They have also created a Twitter account and Facebook page with information on the case.
"The community members have gotten together at our houses, the masjids and mosques," Sheikh said. "Anywhere they see us, they stop us and say, 'hey, listen. How can we help.'"
Khan's older brother, Imran, is trying to remain positive.
"You don't know what's happening," Imran said. "If she's out there in the cold, if she's hungry for the last two days, if she has clothes or not. God knows and I'm thanking God for all the patience and strength He has given us."
The Overland Park Police Department is investigating the disappearance and has not ruled anything out. Officers said they searched the campus on horseback, interviewed family members and students on campus and are looking through surveillance video from a nearby gas station. KU Edwards Campus does not have any surveillance cameras.
Khan is 5'2" tall with dark brown hair, brown eyes and glasses. She was last seen wearing black sweat pants, a yellow/black shirt, black scarf, black regular length jacket, and a black/white long outer coat.
The family has printed about 15,000 fliers and has been distributing them in the Olathe and Overland Park areas.
Her family is offering $10,000 for any tips that lead to Khan's location.
