Turkey is ready to invade Syria

    By M K Bhadrakumar – November 29, 2011

Turkey and its western allies are transferring the Libyan fighters whom they trained and armed to depose Muammar Gaddafi to Syria. Around 600 Libyan ‘volunteers’ have entered Syria. Daily Telegraph reported that secret meetings were held on Friday in Istanbul between the Turkish officials and the Syrian opposition representatives and the Libyan fighters. Large-scale infiltration of weapons from Turkey and Jordan have been going on for months to create civil-war conditions in Syria, but this is the first move to introduce ‘volunteers’.
The move is necessitated by the failure to induce defections form the Syrian armed forces, except a mere handful. Turkey and the western powers are desperate to create the myth of a ‘Syrian resistance’ force without which their blatant aggression will be in full display.
Moscow reacted today indicating it might supply arms to the Syrian regime to defend itself. FM Lavrov just stopped short, calling any arms embargo on Syria as ‘unfair’. Moscow has confirmed that a Russian battle group is sailing toward the Syrian naval base of Tartus on the eastern Mediterranean, close to the Turkish border with Syria. Lavrov criticised the foreign interference in Syria, but without naming Turkey, Jordan, etc.
Things seem to be heading for a flash point, indeed. The sure sign is that US V-P Joseph Biden is heading for Ankara in the weekend. It is a major signal of the US giving the go-ahead to Turkey to act on Syria without fear. Again, Jordanian King, Abdullah, travelled to israel. He is Saudi Arabia’s ‘back channel’ to Israel and a key regional ally for the western intelligence.
Turkey is indeed shedding its fear of the unknown and is coming out into the open on the Syrian situation. Turkish FM Ahmet Davitoglu indicated today for the first time that Turkey is all set for invasion of Syria once it gets the green signal from its western allies. He said this before heading for the combined meeting of EU foreign ministers and Arab League representatives (read Saudi Arabia and Qatar).
The day Davutoglu spoke, November 29, will stand out as a notable date in the chronicle of the Turkish Republic that Kemal Ataturk founded. Ataturk’s ‘red line’ used to be that Turkey should never get entangled in the affairs of the Muslim Middle East but should instead concentrate on its own ‘modernization’. Evidently, the Islamist government in power today thinks Turkey is today ‘modern’ enough already and can now go back and reclaim its Ottoman legacy.
A Turkish army moving into an Arab country - it is a historic point. It is a century after the Turks were driven out by the ‘Arab revolt’. The matrix is dripping with irony. The Arab revolt against the Turks was instigated by Great Britain. And Britain, although a far weaker power today, is still playing a seminal role - except, it is encouraging the Turks to return to the Arab world. One hundred years ago, Britain successfully pitted the Arabs against the Turks. Today, Turks join hands with some Arabs who have a grouse against some other Arabs.

Turkey is ready to invade Syria - Indian Punchline

  • #2
While people within the region genuinely support all the uprisings against Western-backed puppets, Turkey is making a colossal mistake as well as all the "Arab League" and the "GCC." Within the regional populations, any nation seen doing the bidding of the West will lose a lot of credibility. Despite the fact that Assad is unpopular throughout much of Sunni Syria, this act against the current regime is not about the Syrian people at all.

In any case, it is doubtful that any war will actually take place, and if it does, it will not be like the one in Libya.

Russia appears to be backing the Syrian regime, and has deployed Russian war ships to the coast to prevent any intervention.

Foreign intervention objectives are to find a compliant puppet. Assad has stances that go against Israel, and this is why him being a dictator is unacceptable.

Having said, that he has been oppressing his people for a long time. His father Hafez Assad, killed 20000 people in the city of Hama for uprising .

Russian warships are anchored at Syria. There also unconfirmed reports that Russia has sent the S-300 antiaircraft systems to Syria.

It is doubtful it will be like Libya.

russia isnt going to war over some small unimportant country with its regime on the brink of collapse like syria. and if russia refused to sell iran s300's, there is no way they would give them to syria.

Report: Russia Sent Syria Super-Advanced S-300 Missiles

Report: Russia Sent Syria Advanced S-300 Missiles - Defense/Security - News - Israel National News
A report Thursday said that Russia has supplied Syria with advanced S-300 missiles, and has sent advisers to help Syria run the system.

Russian warships that have reached waters off Syria in recent days were carrying, among other things, Russian technical advisors who will help the Syrians set up an array of S-300 missiles Damascus has received in recent weeks, a report in the London-based Arabic language Al Quds-Al Arabi said Thursday. Citing sources in Syria and Russia, the paper said that Moscow sees a Western attack on Syria as a “red line” that it will not tolerate.
Despite the mounting opposition in the West and even in the Arab world against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad for his assaults on protesters seeking to unseat him as leader of the country, Russia maintains its support for Assad, the report said. Russian and Syria military officials are working together to maintain Assad's rule, and to deflect a possible attack by NATO or the U.S and EU.
Along with the missiles, the report says that Russia has installed advanced radar systems in all key Syrian military and industrial installations. The radar system also covers areas north and south of Syria, where it will be able to detect movement of troops or aircraft towards the Syrian border. The radar targets include much of Israel, as well as the Incirlik military base in Turkey, which is used by NATO.
The S-300 system is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems available. The system's radar is able to simultaneously track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12. Deployment time for the S-300 is five minutes, and they have a very long life span, with no maintenance needed.
Russia had attempted to sell the system to Iran, but that sale was cancelled due to pressure by the U.S. and Israel, with Russia returning Iran's deposit. According to the report, the Iranians paid for Syria's S-300 missile system. It is not known if some of the missiles have reached Iran as well.

            Russia deploying warships in Syria

Russia is deploying warships at its base in Syria. The battle group includes aircraft carrying missile cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov. The deployment is being projected as pre-planned and having no relation to the current tensions in Syria, but it follows the US move to station the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group with support vessels off Syria. Speculation is mounting about a western ‘humanitarian intervention’ in Syria.
US and Turkey have asked their nationals to leave Syria. Arab League is linking up with European Union on Syria. France is taking the leadership once again. Interestingly, Turkey has been invited specially to the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels. The moves look strikingly similar to the Libyan intervention. The Russian MFA spokesman said on Friday, “The human rights situation in a particular country may certainly be the subject of international concern, but human rights issues under no conditions should be used as a pretext for interfering in the internal affairs of states, in this case Syria. The Syrian people must decide their own fate, without ‘tips from outside. We absolutely do not accept a scenario of military intervention in Syria.“ There have been unconfirmed reports that Russian military advisors may be helping Syria to set up advanced S-300 missiles, which will make it extremely risky for the West to impose a ‘no-fly zone’ as it did in Libya.
The big question is whether there could be a US-Russia showdown over Syria. For US, regime change in Syria opens the road to taking on Hamas and Hezbollah next, which would isolate Iran. The stakes are very high. For Russia, loss of the Tartus naval base will be a serious blow that will cripple its capability to operate in the Mediterranean region, apart from Syria being an old ally. A US-Russia showdown over Russia can have implications for a host of other issues - Afghan endgame, Iran nuclear problem, US-Pakistan tensions, etc.
Significantly, Kremlin is deputing Russia’s ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin to Beijing and Tehran for consultations over the US/NATO missile defence system. Russia has been focusing on the ABM as a bilateral problem so far with US. Now, commonality of interests is being explored with China and Iran. The implications are profound for the regional security in Central and South Asia as well as the Far East.
To be sure, India’s ‘Act East’ policies - US-India-Japan ‘trilateral dialogue’ in particular - are in Russia’s sights too, as much as China’s. The ‘time-tested’ Russian-Indian cooperation seems to be heading for testy times even as India harmonises with the US’s Asia-Pacific strategy. PM Manmohan Singh’s forthcoming Moscow summit will throw light on the fault lines.

Russia sends warships to naval base in Syria

Amid tightening international sanctions and pressure on Syria, Russia is planning to send an aircraft carrier and other vessels to its naval base in the restive country in a show of solidarity in the face of debates over a military intervention to open a “humanitarian zone” in Syria in recent weeks. The Izvestia newspaper on Monday reported that Russia plans to send the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov -- the only aircraft carrier in its entire fleet -- along with a patrol ship, an anti-submarine craft and other vessels.
The former commander of the Russian naval forces, retired Gen. Viktor Kravchenko, said it would be beneficial to send the Russian navy to avoid an armed conflict in the region at a time of increasing likelihood of military intervention. As a close ally of Syria, Russia opposes a military operation against the Bashar al-Assad regime and is bulking up its presence in the region and marking its interests with its most recent move.
Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in September vetoed a resolution to permit international action against Syria, which has been rocked by eight months of political unrest.
A navy spokesman quoted by the newspaper confirmed that the Russian warships would head to the maintenance base Russia keeps near Tartus on the Syrian coast but said the trip had nothing to do with the uprising against Assad.
The paper said the Admiral Kuznetsov would carry at least eight Sukhoi-33 fighters, several MiG-29K fighters and two helicopters.
Syria is a lucrative market for Russian arms sales worth millions of dollars. There are nearly 5,000 Russian-made tanks currently in the Syrian army as well as more than 500 aircraft and 41 vessels in its naval force.
Experts think that Russia does not want to lose another ally in the Middle East as the Arab Spring is attacking Russian interests in the region.

ill believe it when a turkish jet is shot over syria. russia bitched out of their deal with iran, left iraq to the wolves and now they are standing up for syria? lol unlikely their help goes beyond the bare minimum that is expected of them as an ally.

so what happens when s300's shoot down a turkish jet over syria? turkey can unleash hell on them if they want. the most likely thing is that turkey will become the "peshawar" of anti asad groups looking to topple the regime.

this is not about the west or the east. this is about a murderous atheist like asad and his family murdering muslims.

turkey has the best navy of the region

turkey has the second largest army of NATO

turkey does have nuclear weapons because there are NATO bases in Turkey which hosts nuclear weapons and if a Turkish general decided so, those weapons will become turkish in a second

Turkey, which is a partner of the US-led coalition against Iran along with Israel, possesses some 90 thermonuclear B61 bunker buster bombs at the Incirlik nuclear air base.

Assad is a dictator who has been oppressing Syrian people with backing from the West. His father massacred 20000 people in Hama.

He is doing the same today.

The outcome of this will probably be a Sharia government.

The Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, one of the main groups behind the uprising have rejected US/Western intervention, but have welcomed Turkish assistance.

The only sticky issue here is that Turkey may try to get US/Western interests accommodated with the inevitable Sharia government

The Syria resistance will not accommodate them and will continue to be hostile to Israel and the West.

How can the West which has supported these tyrants take a U turn?

do u even understand the logistics of nuclear weapons? there are nuclear weapons stationed in dozens of nations that are not nuclear powers. these nukes are guarded by military fortifications and only operational by commands in washington, otherwise they are basically useless.

turkey is a base of western nukes. they don't have any more control of these nukes than kazakhstan did of soviet nukes.
