  • 3G Policy has been approved in Pakistan

    Long awaited approval 3G
    policy has reportedly been
    approved by Yousaf Raza
    Gilani, Prime Minister of
    Pakistan, reported Express
Tribune. After PM’s approval the policy
    will now be forwarded to
    Cabinet Committee for the final
    approval from cabinet, before
it’s handed over to Ministry of
    Information Technology for execution.
    According to reports, Mr. Gilani
    chaired this meeting today on
    3G, Grey traffic and Additional
    Spectrum auction for Wireless
Local Loop here at Prime Minister’s House where it was
    agreed that new international
    players as well as existing
    operators would also be
    invited for Instaphone license
auction being the sixth licensee in the country.
    Ministry of Information
    Technology gave a
    presentation on
    recommendations formulated
by Cabinet Committee comprising Dr. Hafeez Sheikh,
    Minister for Finance, Syed
    Naveed Qamar, Minister for
    Water and Power, and Ghos
    Baksh Mehr, Minister for
Privatization and Dr Asim Hussain, Minister for Petroleum
    and Natural Resources.
    It was decided that three
blocks of 10 MHZs each out of
    available 3G spectrums would
be immediately offered for auction and existing
    operators can participate in
    this round as well. New
players will also be invited but
    with provision that if new
player is successful in bid then they would be eligible to start
    operation only after March
    2013 when moratorium on
    new licensing, as per
    Government’s agreement with
Etisalat, would expire. More spectrums would be
    made available for 3/4 G
    services and offered for
    auction with the provision that
    winners of such auction will
receive amended licenses and allocated frequencies by
March 2013 and as such will
be able to start their services
    thereafter.
    In order to ensure
professionalism and transparency, it was also
    decided that a committee of
    Public Sector stakeholders
    including representatives from
    Ministries of Finance,
Information Technology, PTA and representative of
    Frequency Allocation Board
    would supervise auction
    process. PTA would devise an
    appropriate methodology to
conduct varying component of this auction as decided
    under the supervision of the
    Committee.

It was about time. Pakistan is really far behind in technology. 4G LTE is what's running in most European, Asian, and North American nations. In order to attract foreign investors, it can't make it's self appear as a backward nation, which it has thus far.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

4G LTE just came out last year Admin Khan, even the iphone doesn't support it yet..the main reason for no 3G in pakistan is not the technology but the cost, GPRS costs way less and is easily available on cheaper phones..the delay in 3G most likely has to do with ensuring it is available at an affordable cost..Pakistan has among the world's largest WiMax 4G wireless network..and quite recently pakistani companies bagged two gold and five silvers at the Asia Pacific IT Awards..MIT named one of ourscholars among world's top innovators couple of months back..so call us backward mate, but if you look at the kinda circumstances Pakistan is going through what we have achieved despite that is no joke

That's definitely commendable Talal, but no where near enough and a joke when compared to other nuclear nations. When you have people dying on a daily basis, and journalists being abducted by random people, along with people getting smacked up -- with cops watching, people are not going to be interested in that nation. Despite an infusion of aid and remittance by expats, such results that we have is indeed deemed backwards and a lot of work has to be done, and people must criticize it for change to occur. Leave emotions out of it, and admit that Pakistan is a backward nation. For a country like Pakistan, which is nuclear armed with nearly 200million people, having GPRS and barely EDGE in a city like Karachi is considered a smack in the face for many investors who need that connectivity.

Oh, and 4G HSPA+ has been out for quite some time now. LTE on the other hand, has been in the testing for 3 years now, and in the market for a good year or so in the USA, and longer in some Asian nations.

If Pakistan wants foreign investors, they must at least have some basic connectivity on the 'go' for investors.

^ Admin Khan being a nuclear power doesn't qualify the country as being advanced..you need infrastructure and proper institutions in place to foster growth..Sure Pakistan doesn't have all that but we are working towards it..I wouldnt call even Afghanistan a backward nation because they are dealing with their problems in their capacity the best they can..'Backward' is an attitude, Pakistan cant afford to have that attitude if we are to move ahead..our telecommunication is among the fastest growing in the world..we have a massive pool of engineers and scientists, facilities are being created and the nation itself is trying to reform itself..today the media in Pakistan is a strong and free entity. Pakistan is not backward, underdeveloped ? ofcourse!..are we doing something about it ? you bet

PS Admin carefully read Afghanistan2010's response especially the last bit you will understand what i meant by backward thinking

Talal, it makes a nation join an elite club of countries, which generally means you now have the power, now build your institutions and infrastructure so the nation can work towards its advancement.

Talal, you and I have that kind of attitude, not the nation and that's exactly what we need to do, criticize the nation for being so backward in it's thinking. For example, when the railway minister was asked why the country isn't developing its railway industry, the response was 'Afghanistan doesn't have it'.

Both countries need to work together.
