  • Gaddafi : an assessment

    by Professor Idris Samawi Hamid

His initial popularity in Libya is unquestionable, but the exact degree of popular support he enjoyed or did not enjoy in recent times is harder to quantify.

He gave Libyans the best standard of living in Africa -- indeed, many of Libya's most poor fought the hardest for him.

Along with Syria, he consistently supported Iran throughout the Iran-Iraq war and against the rest of the Arab world. This is one reason for which he earned the eternal hatred of the Saudi tribe that occupies the Arabian Peninsula.

He died while valiantly fighting in defence of Libya against the combined forces of NATO and Wahhabi reactionarism Bismi Rabbi al-Husayn (S)

i see the good and bad in him, mostly bad though.

the victory of the anti gaddafi forces is tainted by the interference of nato.

first it was the western sponsored kings who were overthrown by western backed revolutionary leaders, and now its another round of western backed coups against their former allies.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

When I saw the wretched way in which Qaddafi was killed, it immediately reminded me of how Saddam died, with a shrieking mob howling around him.

Yes, we have all heard the stories of how Qaddafi's govt mistreated some of his people, but he also brought development too.

We all know that he was responsible for the Pan-Am Lockerbie bombing, which he carried out in revenge after the US bombed Tripoli and killed his daughter. This US bombing raid was carried out in retaliation for Libyan involvement in the firebombing of a German discotheque, in which US soldiers were killed.

But after 9-11 attacks, the US/West buried the hatchet with Qaddafi and restored relations with him. There were US politicians visiting Libya and dining with Qaddafi. There were European politicians from Britain and France doing this too. Various Western oil companies were doing business there. Britain even handed back to Libya one of the accused Lockerbie bombers whom they had extradited for prosecution.

So it seemed like the West had moved on from its previous conflict with Libya. And one of Qaddafi's sons was spearheading a modernization and liberalization drive, to make Libya more modern and open, possibly with a longterm view towards democracy.

But then the West turned on him so suddenly - it was mainly Britain and France which did this, along with Canada, while the US followed their lead. Obama's inexperience shows yet again. It feels like oil interests were involved.

It feels like someone has buried the hatchet with you, made up with you, invited you for dinner, and then while you are eating they pull out the hatchet and drive it into your skull. What a crazy thing to do.

I'm concerned that Libya will end up like Afghanistan. There will be civil war between the tribal militias, and then some Taliban-like group will come to power. US was foolish to let Britain and France lead it.

randolph, you foolishly claimed that it was possible to outspend the United States in military spending, to weaken it. But you clearly failed to understand that the US govt borrows in dollars, and thus any resulting inflation and devaluation of the dollar then reduces the size of that dollar-denominated debt. Only the US can do this, because the US dollar is the global reserve currency. You failed to recognize this.

But Qaddafi understood this, and had a plan to introduce a new gold currency as a unified currency in Africa, which could have had a powerful effect on international currency markets, and ultimately the US. If you're not aware, gold is very highly valued right now, due to the hyperactive borrow-and-spend policies of the US and EU.
Therefore the West is now facing an unprecedented vulnerability due to the risk to their currencies, the dollar and the euro. Had Qaddafi succeeded in his plan, he could have pulled off a giant coup against the West, comparable to the 1973 oil embargo which he very famously organized during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

              MAY I APPEAL TO EVERYBODY?!
does somebody know the vietnamese(I thought before it was chinese but seems I am wrong...) fairytail about the Dragon King?
I cannot find it on the internet!
Everybody should really read it carefully!
You may laugh about me why I continue telling it on politics, it is because this tale is a tale to keep Your whole life in mind whenever a revolution happens like it happened in Lybia or elsewhere.
You can learn on practical exampls - but knowing this tale - You can teach it to Your children , its one of the greates tales I think.
If you cannot find it I will try to explain it from my memory(but I heard it many years ago , so it won't be as colourfull )

This should give a picture of these Rebels [---Edited---]

Looking at Mccain being greeted in Libya should give you a idea of what I am trying to say. Same with Albania and Kosovo, when it suits the Jihadis well, they will side with the Shaytan himself just to suit their causes, ignoring the fact they are making 1000s of good muslims suffer too.

Even though I support America's stance on Pakistan, and even would hand out my support on teaching Pakistan a lesson, solely on the grounds of Strategy, I would not even do this, wave a American flag on Afghan soil.

These rebels have no principle. Lets see how long their freedom lasts before Nato returns for their promised favors. We will see the usual "Christian Crusaders" nonsense sprout about again.

I notice that the new Libyan govt is delaying burial of Qaddafi and his son. Isn't this contrary to Islam? Mr Al-Arab and Mr Afghanistan2010 - are you aware of this? Do you have any opinion on this?

The new govt may be secretly trying to get Qaddafi buried at sea, like Osama, in order to avoid his grave becoming a shrine where mourners gather.

                    Is burial-at-sea the new "tradition"?

                      Gaddafi Stadium, Pakistan

New name anyone? Or should it remain "Gaddafi" in remembrance?

The stadium was named after the late Muammar Gaddafi because he was supportive of Pakistan's nuclear programme.

It could be named NATO Stadium, or Exxon Stadium. Or name it after Libya's new Emir-ul-Momineen.

Meanwhile, the new Emir has declared that Libya will be ruled by Sharia

I just hope he doesn't declare any new rule banning paper, or radio, or requiring windows be painted black. If he does, you will know why, because I have already given the reasons.
