The number of female police will reach to 5,000 within the next years, deputy interior minister Abdul Rahman Rahman said.
“The women’s presence in police force is necessary, but illiteracy and old traditions prevent Afghans to let women join the police,” he said, talking at the conference on “national police, women and security” held in Kabul.
He touched on the national police program and said, this is a nationwide program to encourage people especially women to join police force.
“The program started in Kabul and is now going on in 65 districts of different provinces while the process in Herat and Nangarhar provinces is going ahead fast.
“The ministry of interior with the cooperation of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) launched this program in districts of Kabul province which was fruitful for attracting people’s confidence to police,” he told Wakht News Agency.
1,200 women have been so far attracted to police force.
Meanwhile, head of the gender department of the interior ministry says policewomen face many problems and the ministry officials have bad behavior with them.
“A number of the officials don’t want women to join the force due to unknown reasons,” she said.
Kabul MP, Shokria Barakzai asked the government to pave the ground for women in recruitment the security forces.
“It is not difficult to recruit women in security forces, but we have made it difficult due to the old traditions,” she said.
