Holder: US will hold Iran accountable in plot to assassinate Saudi ambassador

By Associated Press, Published: October 11

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department on Tuesday accused elements of the Iranian government of being involved in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States, and Attorney General Eric Holder said the U.S. would hold Iran accountable.

Two people, including a member of Iran’s special operations unit known as the Quds Force, were charged in New York federal court. Holder said the bomb plot was a flagrant violation of U.S. and international law.

“We will not let other countries use our soil as their battleground,” Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, said at a press conference in Washington with Holder and FBI Director Robert Mueller.

Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen who also holds an Iranian passport, was charged along with Gholam Shakuri, whom authorities said was a Quds Force member.

FBI Director Robert Mueller says many lives could have been lost in the plot to kill the ambassador with bombs in the U.S.

Holder said the U.S. government would be taking unspecified action against the Iranian government as early as Tuesday afternoon. Asked whether the plot was blessed by the top echelons of the Iranian government, Holder said the Justice Department was not making that accusation.

A war beween iran and saudi arabia will result in a postive way for the muslims either.
so the army of mahdi will have it easy to capture both states with easyness.

A war between Iran and USA will result also in a postive way.
the army of mahdi will serve severe defeats to the soldiers of lucifer (us+nato).

again these propaganda , since USA exists its fought wars and told lies to this world, i remember the tonking resultion (US Navy reported taking fire from communist vietcongs)

There is something very strange going on.

A few years ago someone with contacts in the UK government told me that a war is needed for economic reasons every 10-12 years or so, so a war will be created even if it is not justified e.g. Iraq & WMDs.

There was a major war against raq in 1991, then 12 years later in Iraq again in 2003, and of course Afghanistan too.

I was expecting the next US-UK war to be in 2013 or 2015.

Things happened around the world, so people thought it might be Iran, Somalia, then Yemen, then even Libya.

Now virtually the whole Arab world has exploded with the Arab spring. Something fishy is going on, and just the past day or so we hear about Iran and Saudi.

Too many things are happening in such a short time at such a fast pace. The globalists are up to something, I am not sure what it is though.

            Iran v Saudi

Iran uses Yemeni Shia radicals against Saudi.

It uses Bahraini Shias against Bahrain and the rest of the Sunni GCC including Saudi.

It promotes Kuwaiti, Iraqi Shias on Saudis borders.

It has its propaganda organ, Press TV.

            Saudi

Saudi is on the defensive so is not attacking Iran in any way.

However fundamentally Saudi is in a far stronger position than Iran.

            - Arab world will always support Arab Saudi over Iran.
            - Sunni Turkey conservatives will prefer Sunni Saudi to Iran.
            - Pakistan will prefer Saudi to Iran if it ultimately has to chose e.g.
Pakistan sending troops to Bahrain to quell pro-Iranian Shias.
            - Bangladesh will of course support Saudi for different reasons including the fact that there are 2 million Bangladeshis in Saudi and the BD economy needs that money. More importantly however Saudi is an ally and helps Bangladesh immensely and vice versa. Saudi would perhaps even have carried out military action against Myanmar if Myanmar started a war with us.

            - Indonesia, Malaysia, Central Asian states will remain neutral and not take sides.

If Saudi does do anything to Iran, what it can it do?

I doubt it can start providing support to Baluchi rebels in Iranian Balochistan, it can't at the moment sponsor Afghan militants against Iran as Kabul is run by Karzai.

It can't launch a direct war against nuclear Iran which is far stronger than the whole GCC combined.

It will be interesting to see the Saudi reaction, as they seem to have a limited set of cards to use.

There is definitely something brewing though.

There is a difference between the Saudi state and policy making elite and national interests, and the "Wahabis" (Salafis).

Same with the Iranian policy making elite and the Khomeneists.

This is is about two nation states, albeit with race and religion playing a role, but not the key role.

It's Sunni Islamist elements who are murdering people in Iraq and trying to dislodge Syria from Russia and Iran's orb. The Wahabis (wanting to create more earthly paradises like Afghanistan and Somalia) are looking to topple Saudis royal family and replicate the overthrow of the Shar in Iran.

Security of Saudi Arabia a red line, says Jordanian FM Amman, Oct 12 (Petra) -- Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh has expressed Jordan's full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and that justice must take its course in the plot which was deigned to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States.

Judeh told Petra that Jordan categorically rejects and condemns any act by anyone against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or any of its national figures, stressing that His Majesty King Abdullah II has made it clear that the security, safety, prosperity and interests of Saudi Arabia are a red line.

The minister added that those behind the vicious scheme must receive deterrent legal punishment so to be a lesson for anyone tempted to undermine the forces of good in the world, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its wise leadership.

AMMAN (Petra) - Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Wednesday emphasised that Jordan stands in solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
“Jordan absolutely rejects and strongly denounces any attempts to harm Saudi Arabia or any of its national figures or representatives,” he said yesterday, stressing the Kingdom’s firm position in this regard.
Concerning the alleged assassination plot targeting the Saudi ambassador in Washington, Adel Al Jubeir, he said justice must take its course, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable under the law.

Saudi Arabia weighs response to alleged Iran plot

By Angus McDowall and Sylvia Westall
                              DUBAI/VIENNA | Thu Oct 13, 2011 8:46am EDT

DUBAI/VIENNA (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia said on Thursday it was weighing its response to an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate its ambassador in Washington that has increased tensions between OPEC's two top oil producers.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, on a visit to Austria, said the kingdom would have a "measured response" to the alleged plot. Iran called the accusations a fabrication designed to hurt its relations with its neighbors.
"We hold them (Iran) accountable for any action they take against us," Prince Saud said in Vienna, where he was discussing opening a religious dialogue center. "Any action they take against us will have a measured response from Saudi Arabia."
Prince Saud said this was not the first time Iran had been suspected of similar acts, and condemned Tehran for trying to meddle in the affairs of Arab states. Asked what actions Saudi Arabia might take, he said: "We have to wait and see."
U.S. authorities said on Tuesday they had uncovered a plot by two Iranian men linked to Tehran's security agencies to hire a hitman to kill ambassador Adel al-Jubeir with a bomb planted in a restaurant. One man, Manssor Arbabsiar, was arrested last month while the other is believed to be in Iran.
Some Iran experts were skeptical, saying they could not see the motive for such a plot. Iran has in the past assassinated its own dissidents abroad, but an attempt to kill an ambassador of another country would be a highly unusual departure.
Iran has denied the charges and expressed outrage, saying the allegations threaten stability in the Gulf -- where Saudi Arabia and Iran, the biggest regional powers, are fierce rivals and Washington has a huge military presence.
President Barack Obama spoke on Wednesday to Saudi King Abdullah about the alleged plot, the White House said.
"The president and the king agreed that this plot represents a flagrant violation of fundamental international norms, ethics, and law," the White House said in a statement issued by press secretary Jay Carney.
Earlier Carney told reporters: "We're responding very concretely with actions we know will have an impact on Iran and will make clear this kind of behavior is unacceptable and will further isolate Iran."
In Britain, Foreign Secretary William Hague told parliament the alleged plot "would appear to constitute a major escalation in Iran's sponsorship of terrorism outside its borders."
"We are in close touch with the United States' authorities and will work to agree an international response along with the United States, the rest of the European Union and Saudi Arabia," he said.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran soured after the 1979 revolution that brought Shiite Muslim clerics to power on the other side of the Gulf. Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite Iran consider themselves protectors of Islam's two main rival sects.
The rift sharpened this year after Saudi Arabia deployed troops to the Gulf island kingdom of Bahrain to crush a Shi'ite-led uprising there.
                              FOMENTING VIOLENCE
Saudi Arabia has also accused Iran of fomenting violence in its own Eastern Province, where the kingdom's Shi'ite minority is concentrated.
In a particularly strong-worded statement, Saudi Arabia's official SPA news agency quoted an un-named official source as condemning what it called "the outrageous and heinous" assassination plot and said the kingdom.
"The kingdom, for its part, is considering decisive measures and steps it would take in this regard to stop these criminal actions and to decisively confront any attempt to undermine the stability of the kingdom, threaten its security and spread sedition among its people," the statement said.
On Wednesday, Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former chief of Saudi intelligence, said there was overwhelming evidence of Iranian official involvement in the plot.
Iran's parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, called the charges an American fabrication.
"America wants to divert attention from problems it faces in the Middle East, but the Americans cannot stop the wave of Islamic awakening by using such excuses," Larijani said in an open session of parliament.
Prince Saud said all information Saudi Arabia has indicates that Tehran was responsible.
"It is not the first time Iran has done something like this in order to mix itself up in Arab affairs," Prince Saud said, adding that a similar attempt was made in Kuwait, where a group suspected of planning an attack was arrested.
"Iran must understand there is only way for international cooperation between countries -- and this is through the respect and adherence to international laws and people's rights."
The alleged plot was revealed shortly before Saudi Arabia said King Abdullah, believed to be 88, would in coming days undergo surgery in Riyadh for a back problem.
(Writing by Sami Aboudi in Dubai; Additional reporting by Fredrik Dahl in Vienna)
