      PM launches 'Doel' distribution

      Tue, Oct 11th, 2011 11:53 am BdST
Gazipur, Oct 11 (bdnews24.com) — The prime minister has launched the distribution and marketing of Doel, the first laptop manufactured in the country.

Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) is introducing low-priced laptops with four models ranging between Tk 10,000 and Tk 26,000.

Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the laptops in a ceremony at Dhaka's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) around 10.30am on Tuesday morning.

Even though marketing of these laptops have been launched, they will not be available for general sale initially. According to a government decision, the laptops will be primarily distributed to government organisations. Later, it will be sold to the public.

The test-production of the laptops started on July 10 at the TSS factory in Gazipur. The laptops are the product of an initial project worth Tk 1.84 billion.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Malaysian Thin Film Transistor (TFT) and foreign experts.

TSS managing director Mohammad Ismail said that the laptops are made up of more than 150 components, 60 percent of which, including the motherboard, would be manufactured in the factory.

The Primary model boasts a 10-inch LCD while the Advanced model has a 14-inch WXGA LED Backlight screen. Only the Primary model has an android operating system, as all others use Linux. The Advanced laptop has a Pentium processor, the Primary has a VIA processor, while the Basic and Standard models have Atom processors.

          This is darn impressive.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Sorry to say, but Tormana is correct.

Why is it that Bengali Tiger, supports Sharia in Pashtun Hewad, but promotes how progressive and forward thinking Bengladesh is, plus its a secular nation and I am very impressed by its acheievements.

But why is Bengal Tiger a big contradiciton? I hope people notice this.

Bangladesh seeks global partners for IT sector

With government services being digitised, software exports expanding and rising employment in IT, Dhaka is looking for expertise for technology parks
                      • By Saifur Rahman, Business Editor
                      • Published: 00:00 October 13, 2011
Dubai: Bangladesh, which is digitising government services, is seeking international expertise in setting up an IT park near the capital Dhaka, an official said.
"Currently the government has earmarked a tower in Dhaka's Kawran Bazaar to convert it into a software park. However, it is seeking international partners for a large greenfield IT park to be set up on a 230-acre plot of land outside the city in Kalialoir," said Hashim Ahmad, acting secretary of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (Basis).

"This will help us to attract large international IT and telecom service providers to invest and set up facilities as the country's administration, public service and the private sector are migrating towards the IT platform."

Earlier this year, Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority floated a tender seeking expression of interest (EoI) for the establishment of a Software Technology Park (STP) from suitable parties.

The establishment of the IT park will help the government in developing its e-services platform, "Digital Bangladesh".

Ahmad said the government is also planning to set up smaller scale IT clusters across all seven administrative divisions, under an "IT Village" concept that will help nurture rural talent and help entrepreneurship across the country.

Although the country is a latecomer in the global IT race, it is grooming more than 5,000 software professionals per year to help realise its vision. It has more than 800 registered software companies employing more than 30,000 professionals and engineers that are offering specialised and value-added services.

The industry generates revenues of $250 million (Dh918.3 million) per annum in an economy that generated a value of $100 billion last year. Exports of software last year reached only $41.47 million. About 56 per cent of the revenues come from IT enabled services while the rest comes from software.

Although currently 160 companies in Bangladesh are exporting software and IT services to 60 countries, their exposure to the Middle East has been minimal, a fact that the exporters want to change through their participation in Gitex.

The US is the largest destination for Bangladesh software exports, while the UAE is one of the smallest.
Bangladesh has put high priority on the IT sector as online services could help increase transparency and reduce corruption. Its Digital Bangladesh project is gradually moving ahead from content development and offering downloadable forms to payment services.
"The government is soon going to finalise the payment gateway facilities and select vendors for collection of service fees. Once that happens, the government services will see radical changes in service delivery that will reduce not only corruption, but also red tape," said Shoeb Ahmad Masoud, Director of Business Automation Ltd, which is helping the government manage Haj services.

Bangladesh already offers some important services online, such as university admission, board exam results, passport and immigration services.

                      Indigenous laptop
A Bangladesh government-owned company Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) is launching its indigenous laptop, Doel, named after the national bird, on Saturday.
The 1.48 billion Taka (Dh718 million) project's trial run began at a TSS factory in Gazipur on July 8. Prime minister Shaikh Hasina will officially inaugurate Doel, priced between 10,000 and 25,000 Taka (Dh1,250).
"It will be given to the administration and it will hit the market afterwards," head of the parliamentary standing committee on telecom ministry, Hasanul Haque Inu, told reporters in Dhaka recently.

First-ever ICT training centre for police in two years
DHAKA, Oct 7 (BSS)- Bangladesh police is set to install the first- ever training centre on information technology in next two years in a bid to enhance their professional excellence.

Construction of the centre titled “Bangladesh Police Korea Centre for Information Technology” is expected to be completed by 2013 at a cost of Taka 24 crore (3 million US dollars).

“The centre will provide the policemen with training on information of communication technology to enhance their professional excellence to deal with the crimes involving modern technologies,” Special Superintendent of CID and project director of the institute Mohammad Rezaul Haider told BSS today.

Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), which will provide the cent percent fund to set up the centre, gave their nod to the proposal prepared by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), he said.
“We are now preparing Development Project Proforma (DPP) for setting up the institute,” he said, adding that they will send the DPP to the government for its approval.
Rezaul said the centre would be installed at Police Mill Barrack at Lalbagh in the old city.
Work on construction of the centre is expected to start in November next, another CID official said.
After installation of the institute, around 800 cops will be imparted with trainings per year on basic of computer, hardware and networking while 500 with developing software.
Some 80 policemen will also be given training on cyber crimes per year in a bid to develop their professional excellence to deal with such crimes involving high-technology.
Local and foreign trainers will conduct the training programmes. Bangladesh police have started providing training to train the trainers, who will give training to policemen.
Several trainings including a two-week long Training of Trainers (ToT) was arranged at the Detective Training School in February this year.
