  • School expels Pakistani boy, 13, for getting married

A 13-year-old Pakistani boy has taken his school to court, challenging his expulsion after he got married.

Peshawar, Pakistan (CNN) -- A 13-year-old Pakistani boy has taken his school to court, challenging his expulsion after he got married.

Gherat Khan, a 7th grader at Peshawar Model School, filed a petition with the High Court in the northwest Pakistani city saying the school's principal sent him packing after she found out about the wedding.

Gherat said his wife is 16, although CNN could not independently verify her age.

Pakistan has no clear guidelines prohibiting underage marriage.

Civil law says boys must be 18; girls 16. But Islamic law says a couple can marry if both have reached puberty and if their parents approve.

"I am young but our family had problems," Gherat said, explaining why he tied the knot at such an early age.

His father had passed away and his mother was sick, he said. The family had fallen on hard times. So his relatives, including his grandfather, decided to find him a bride who could help the family with housework

Gherat said he loves his wife and does not regret his family members' decision.

    The school, however, felt differently.

Principal Beatrice Jamil said the decision to expel Gherat was taken after consulting with the school's directors.

His file said the school removed Gherat because his parents removed him.

But Jamil admitted that wasn't the real reason.

Gherat, she said, was told to leave because the school worried he'd share intimate details of married life with classmates.

"It's prohibited. It's almost taboo," she said.

Gherat said he was upset when he found out he could no longer attend classes.

If the school deems something inappropriate, he won't talk about it with his friends, he said.

All he wants is to finish his education so he can become a doctor, Gherat added.

"I want to go to this school," he said.

For her part, Jamil wishes Gherat well -- but doesn't want him back.

"Especially now that it's publicized," she said.

What the! Expel him just because he'll share intimate details of marriage with his CLASSMATES?! That's such a lame reason! Good God. And will he not do it just because he's not allowed to go to that school? Expulsion ain't gonna prevent him, Miss Principle. And even if he does, so what? Does school policy not allow for him to do that?

Gosh, what right does this principle think she have expelling him just because he might share "intimate" marriage details with classmates? :S

What does the PK government think of this?

And the principle ... her name doesn't sound Pukhtun or Pakistani/Asian...

Some background info on the poor dude:

        • father died some years ago
        • mother has been sick for some time
        • his mother felt she had to get him married before she died
        • plus she wanted a daughter in law that could be with her
        • the boy studies in a famous school here
        • the school however has been very lame in its policy
        • the boy! A Pashtun, Ghairat Khan says:

"I wanna study and become a doctor and help poor people".

Sad isnt it!! here's someone who wants to study but the School wont let him!!! LOL

the school has no right by expelling because of his marriage. the young man seems seems pretty mature and responsible for his age.

it's not a marriage, it's a compromise which he can name as whatever he wishes to do so as long as he takes the responsibility for it. the school can expel him too if they wish to but not by using his marriage as an excuse.

two wrongs don't make a right. because your family is having issues you are going to get a 13 year old kid married and expect these issues to disappear?

Hmm... how can you tell? Beatrice is a common name in the west, with French and Italian origins. I'm not sure how you conclude that she "seems to be a Panjabi Christian," but very interesting!

She could be a Pashtun Christian for all we know, right? Since we haven't seen her or talked to her or know anything about her other than her name and a couple of comments in the article. Yeah?

Guys, we can not judge an ethnicity based on one person. Ethnicity does not matter at all.

For example, If you see one Pakistani drinking, That does not mean all Pakistanis are alcoholic. Good and bad exist in all. In order for us Pashtuns to succeed we need to stop pointing fingers at others. This does not mean all Punjabis get married at the age of 13, or all Pashtuns get married at the age of 13.

If we want to see success, we must respect other ethnic groups. Working against them does not help at all.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Beatrice is common in the west but Jamil is not. have you heard her accent? does it sound like italian or french? if you ask any of the paaki christian they have two names one christian other one according to the area where they live in. watch the video, and listen to her accent. its also possible she could be a pashtun christian. according to my knowledge not many pashtuns are christian. yes there are some drug addicted, homeless pashto speakers who have converted to christianity, but she doesnt seem one of them.

its easy to find out, go on face book, look at her firends. then i ahve nothing against christians, she can follow what ever religion she likes, i feel sorry for that young boy, his life will be ruined. may be it was some kind of jealousy. no one speaks about what the reality is in some private schools, i have heard alot of weird stuff about private schools.
