Three teenage girls have been injured in a shooting in West London, Scotland Yard has said.

The victims, aged 17, 18 and 19, were taken to a central London hospital after the incident outside an address in John Fearon Walk, North Kensington.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We understand the victims are in a serious condition but we do await an update."

Police said they were alerted by the ambulance service at 19:17 BST and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The three are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at a central London hospital. One is believed to be in critical, while the other two are said to be in a serious condition. An area on the edge of the Mozart Estate was cordoned off last night, with almost a dozen police officers at the scene.

Trident, the unit of the Metropolitan Police that deals with gun crime within the black community, is investigating. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We understand the victims are in a serious condition but we do await an update." The young women's injuries were "not life-threatening", the spokesman said, adding: "we have got officers down there trying to piece together what is going on, at this stage we are doing all we can."

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, said at the scene: "It can be a pretty intimidating place to live around here. You would feel intimiated by groups of kids if they don't know who you are." Karen Buck, MP for Regent's Park and North Kensignton, who had warned earlier this year that deep cuts community safety budgets would lead to an increase in gang violence, tweeted: "On Mozart Estate after reports of 3 girls being shot. Desperately worried about local gang and youth violence. We have to get a grip."
