U.S. seeks Bangladesh help to secure Afghanistan

Bangladesh prime minister Shiekh Hasina said Bangladeshis has reservation regarding the U.S. and British led military intervention in Afghanistan.

Source:(AHN)Reporter: Saleem SamadLocation:New York, NY, United StatesPublished:September 27, 2011 12:08 pm EDTTopics:Unrest, Conflicts And War, Armed Conflict, Politics, Defense, Armed Forces, Unrest, Conflicts And War, Guerrilla Activity

In a very rare gesture, the United States on Monday sought Bangladesh assistance in rebuilding civil strife-riddled Afghanistan.

Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns said the U.S.' relationship with Bangladesh is one of the highest priorities for the United States, as it works closely working with Bangladesh in the areas of counter-terrorism, energy, food security and climate change adaptation.

He made the comments during a meeting with Bangladesh foreign minister Dipu Moni on the sidelines of the United Nations' 66th General Assembly.
Bangladesh senior officials at the meeting said the national sentiment is against sending troops to Afghanistan, according to sources.

In October 2010, Bangladesh unofficially declined an extraordinary request by U.S. special envoy Richard Holbrooke to deploy large contingents of troops to help secure Afghanistan against Taliban advances.

Taliban fighters responded and threatened Bangladesh. The Taliban, in a statement, said that Bangladesh leaders would commit a historic mistake of fighting against Islam and against the Afghan people by sending soldiers to Afghanistan.

Bangladesh has made it clear it will not send its troops to Afghanistan while refuting reports that the U.S. had requested the country to contribute soldiers to the war-torn nation.

Previously, Bangladesh prime minister Shiekh Hasina said Bangladeshis has reservations regarding the U.S. and British led military intervention in Afghanistan.

    No, no and...

    NO!!

Our soldiers should not go to Afghanistan, though we are the biggest contributor of UN peacekeeping forces in the world.

Bangladeshi troops in Haiti, female force.

I totally reject any Bangladeshi military involvement in war torn Afghanistan. The US should instead of wasting time on ridiculous suggestions such as this focus on helping Bangladesh get its share of the pre-71 assets which Pakistan stole from us.

    We are owed billions.

The US should focus on this if they want to "help" us.

To all posters please ignore this troll.

The troll has made irrelevant comments about people's skin colour, and a childish post which brings the quality of the forum down.

        Troll placed on ignore.

        On topic:

We Bangladeshis wish our Afghan brothers and sisters regardess of ethnicity all the best. We wish them peace and prosperity and freedom from external interference.

We have no business in their internal affairs or the war there. I am sure that 99% of the forum here would agree with me.

        Thanks.

I don't understand, according to this article if I understand correctly "securing Afg against Taliban advances" must mean defending territory which means being ready to fight the Taliban i.e. a combat role.

Even Turkey doesn't have a combat role!

Why is the US harassing Bangladesh for this?

We are not a great military power, or have delusions of grandeur. The Turkish, Iranian, Egyptian, Indonesian armies are all far far stronger. We are a developing country dealing with economic growth, political stability, employment etc.

The usual reasoning provided by the Americans is BD (Bangladesh) is a "moderate Muslim democracy", and..........?

Why does that mean we should send our soldiers to fight and get killed by the Taliban? Something even Turkey doesn't do.

I think this definitely shows malevolent intent on part of the Americans, to draw us in to a conflict we are not part of, make us a target of terrorist attacks and an object of hatred.

The Bangladeshi government should tell the Americans to {insert language}.

US asks for Bangladeshi troops in Afghanistan

            Staff Correspondent
The USA yesterday requested Bangladesh to send combat troops to Afghanistan to ensure security and stability in the war-ravaged country, reports BBC Bangla Service.
US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke made the plea before Foreign Minister Dipu Moni at a meeting in New York.

Dipu Moni assured the US envoy of further talks on the issue.

Diplomatic analysts in Dhaka, however, say it is risky to send troops to Afghanistan right now and the decision of sending troops should be made after consulting the United Nations and other Muslim-dominated countries.

A foreign ministry statement in the capital disclosed the US request for troops.
The foreign minister also informed the US envoy that the proposal of sending teachers and doctors to the war-ravaged country has already been made to Bangladesh, the statement added.

            http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesig...php?nid=156159

Since that time Holbrooke has died. Good riddance to bad terrorist rubbish.

He has been replaced by Burns.

American terrorist Holbrooke dead 12 weeks after he wanted to drag Bangladesh in to the 30 year + Afghan war.

William Burns, wants to drag Bangladesh in to a bloody civil war which has lasted decades and killed maybe millions.

Bengali_Tiger, here you are making a mistake---Bangla Desh, Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, and other impartial Muslim countries can contribute to Afghanistan's stability.

I have one idea in mind---forces from the above Muslim countries should be deployed in Afghanistan and FATA while UN, China, Russia, US-NATO, etc. should overseer the process of rooting out the terrorist menace...

Which Muslim countries are you referring to exactly? What have they done for Afghanistan for the last few decades besides use it as a proxy state to battle one another. Has America ever opened suicide bombing camps in Khost to be used to blow up markets?

Faye, I understand, your Anti-Americanism is due to your love for Pakistan, but darling, honey cakes, Pakistan is the one who is shedding blood in Afghanistan not America.

The Bengalis can use their army to protect its citizens from future floods.

Muslim countries are no different than European countries in terms of division and rivalry, take for instance, Turkey's stance on Syria, Iran's stance on Gulf Arab states, these rivalries are not due to America, and stop blaming America for everything.

The Muslim world is just as opportunistic as America is, during the 70's, every Muslim country took part in demolishing Afghanistan with America, Pakistan, Saudi's, Chinese, Iranians. etc.

As a matter of fact Faye, what kind of Muslim countries does Afghanistan feel safe under, when throughout the last 4 decades or so, nearly every Muslim country has took some role is demonising Afghan society, even in Herat, there were uprisings led by Iran against the Secular forces, women and children were hung and dragged by 4 by 4's infront of everyone.

America maybe bad to some, but they have invested billions in Afghan redevelopment and construction, but they have came to a land, thats plagued with backwardness and absolute no sense of nationhood due to external mainly but also internal forces.

Afghanistan will always have this problem unless it gets it act together. Use the aid given to them by Nato for its own advantage, distance itself from the Muslim world, become truely independent in the sense, that it takes no direction from anybody, including those of the same faith, Afghan citizens, should concern themselves more on their own development, than what some Arab is going through in Palestine and Iraq.

Afghanistan should not be a haven whereby people hire mecenaries to indulge in acts of criminality.

Afghanistan is the land of Afghans, its a country by its own right, and should not be a staging ground for external forces both in the West and the Virus stricken Muslim world.

Gadoonwal, exactly what is wrong with Buddism and Hindusim which were Religions that Pre-Islamic Afghans followed.

The best way to destroy a nation is to cut its roots, our roots have been drenched in so much fanticism by the Middle Easteners, that no wonder, after so many years of our people's acceptance to other faiths, that it just boiled down to blowing up the budda in bamiyan, exactly for what?

Gadoonwal...The Chinese were the first to have their own Printing Press, developed roads and were the first to invent gun powder and rocket technology in the form of fireworks. All that was accomplished during Buddist era, exactly what have been acheived as a people for the last few centuries? We had one of our own go to space during Communist rule, look what happened there.

                            1. Afghans should themselves be able to take care of their nation after the invaders are kicked out. Interference by external sources is the principal cause of instability / warring anywhere.

                            2. Bangladesh will definitely not get involved in any security or policing job unless invited by a legitimate free Afghan government.

                            3. Temperamentally Bengalee Muslims are not mercenaries that anyone should hope to use. That is what the British had discovered in 1857 when the Bengal Army revolted. Bengalees were then termed non-martial officially. Later during WW II two units of Bengalee Muslims were raised as a test case. Our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Havildar in one. When the first unit landed in Palestine they realized they were facing fellow Muslims from Turkey. More concerning was the fact that the Friday Khutba at that time was offered in the name of Caliph Abdul Hamid. There was no way they were going to fire on the soldiers of their spiritual head. The unit refused to fight and was sent back to be disbanded.

                              1. Pashtun soldiers in the 1920s under British command when told to fight Iraqis refused when they found out the Iraqis were Muslim, though the Punjabis didn't and were loyal to the British. This has been affirmed by ex-Pakistani military officer A.H Amin.

                              2. Pashtun fighters and tribesmen were loyal to the Islamic Khilafah in Istanbul and fought battles with the British in the early 20th century.

                              3. Bengali friends of mine told me there were "Pathan soldiers in a Pathan unit" in 1971 that came to East Pakistan being told it was a land of Hindus. However they refused to fight when they heard the adhan, due to a hadith related to this. As you yourself and others know some Pakhtuns even fought on our side.

                              4. I personally read a moving account of an ex-Khudai Khidmatgar raised in Pashtunkhwa (Sarhad) who went to East Pakistan for work, during the war he joined Bengali liberation forces. It was on a website in the Daily star.

I am glad that you have stated that Bangladeshi troops will not be going to Afghanistan. What is more important is helping Afghans with education, relief work, health, finance all of which Bangladesh is doing through BRAC.

Brother, Pakistan itself is a party in conflict. Afghanistan will not accept Pakistani troops in its land. India will also veto it.

During Pakistan time, out of all the people in the west Pakistan, Bangali troops were most close with the Pathan soldiers. Same will happen with the Afghan Pathans as well.

Eastwatch, post 15, commenting on good relations between Pakhtoon and Bengali soldiers in the Pakistan army before 1971. I do not agree that Afghans would welcome the Bangladesh army though. Pashtunkhwa Pashtuns however are more pro-Bengali.

Guys, Bangladesh is in no way in position to send more than 5-10000 soldiers and they will be deoployed in limited scale. But having a neutral muslim country soldier on the ground will give USA the much needed acceptability in Afhganistan as well as in wider muslim world. I think Bangladesh should seriously think about sending its troops there. If we could bring lawless Siera Leon under our control who also took Bengali as their national language then why not to our Brother Afhgainstan?

If you read my post I said the participation will be in a very limited scale. May be just controlling a small town. It wont be a big deal for Bangladesh. There are again a lot of non combat duties there. Bangladesh can even negotiate on this. We will only know if Bangladesh ever decide to participate. Dont think that our country is run by idiots.

We are already participating through BRAC. Also our FM said that they are going to send teachers and doctors. We already have first hand experience in Ahganistan,

With US withdrawal i think deploying troops from Islamic world for reconstruction, rehabilitation and maintaining Peace will be welcomed by Taliban as well as other factions of Afghanistan.

An all and all Islamic force for stability in Afghanistan is a good idea but only if US get out and help these countries to bring peace

Its all about level of comfort and Afghan people will like to see such troops rebuilding, rehabilitating and keeping peace in Afghanistan while at the same time respecting their faith instead of burning Quran and killing Afghans for sports by collecting their fingers as trophies.

I think this is indeed a good proposal. Bangladish is already engaged in relief work in Afghanistan, they(bangladesh) have done so much work in this devastated country. Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Turkey, can play a great role in restoring peace. But thanks to Saudis, jordinians etc, they are not needed.

Holdbrroke is very aware of BRAC operations in Afghanistan. He knows BRAC emloyees do not need bodyguards or tanks. These folks mingle with local people and trusted by the people. Talebans generally leave the BRAC emplyoees alone.

However, it still needs to be studied how troop deployment will be viewed by everyone including Talebans.

BD govt has just received this friendly call from the USA. BD has to follow protocol, it will certainly not go there without a formal invitation by the GoA. But, if and when GoB accepts a formal invitation it will not be without first setting conditions, for sure. For example, conducting a free and fair election should also constitute a condition.

It will take many months before BD govt can take any final decision. It will have also to talk with other participating Muslim countries as well. I personally agree with the current US proposal if the alcohol-drinking and pig-eating Christian troops are out by a certain date, and other Muslim countries also take part in this mission. I wish the joint mission a success

My issue is with combat troops. Combat engagements will certainly make life difficult for people doing NGO work such as BRAC.

UN will be O.K but I think under OIC banner may be more fruitful. I am sure Taliban will not have any problem with OIC troops. I am actually waiting for the day when all Muslim nation combined their resources to overcome the burdening issue out of Islamic world. We have potential to over come any situation. We just need political commitment.

There has been talk circulating within Obama administration that US would like to withdraw troop out of Afghanistan by 2012. Perhaps this is one of the reason US wants neutral Muslim nation like BD step in to fill the gap. Obama understand the Muslim psychology too well. USA knows very well that it's impossible to make Afghan accept none Muslim troops around their back yard.

Also economic situation in USA still in worst condition compare to any other time in recent history.

Personally I feel its the duty of all muslim nations to join hands and eradicate Talibans, because they are the ones giving bad name to the muslims around the world by distorting Islam.

However, the ground reality is,if we are not going under UN banner,(which we aren't) then Bangladesh is simply walking into sweet talking trap of uncle Sam.Because we can't bear the expenses of keeping our troops abroad for a long time with our own money.Especially when there's so much work left to do at home.

It looks like US just wants others to fight its war.Since its becoming expensive for them to fight the war.If we send troops there,we are not only risking the lives of our countrymen, but also will attract terrorists to target BD.Not to forget the economic impact.

Talibans won't kill muslim army sounds very funny to me.Because that is the way they got on power,by killing fellow Muslims. The question is,Are the Talibans really Muslims?

i hate to agree with you buts its true, Bengali troops being deployed in Afghanistan is not good news for Pakistan as the present Gov in Bangladesh is pro india and this will allow india to project its soft power in Afghanistan through Bengali presence!

Troops from Arab countries such as Jordan, Egypt, and Syria should be deployed in Afghanistan, not any country from the Sub-Continent.

Not really. Turkish armed forces already have a strong presence in Afghanistan and it was widely published that Talibans do not usually fire on the convoys that bear Turkish flag. Both Turkey and Bangladesh are officially secular countries and Turkey being more secular in terms of socio-cultural aspect. So, Bangladesh would not be seen as a traitor if it sends troops there. Beside I do not think Bangladesh Army, just like Turkish Army and many NATO countries like Germany, France would divulge much into actual fighting against the Taliban. The attitude of the Americans, Canadians, British against Taliban is much more aggressive than that of others(French, Germans). The main reason why Bangladesh could be forced to send troops there however is because of the US military aids similar to the ones Pakistan Army is getting for ages.

Grommel, BD poster #200. I think he was naive. The Taliban (for whatever reason) have more hatred for Bangladesh than Turkey and have kidnapped and murdered Bangladeshi engineers in the country, let alone non-combatant soldiers.

Give us a respite. You are hitting BD very hard. Are you living in 1971?

A little something I found today while reading through some news..

Taliban warns Bangladesh against Afghanistan deployment

WASHINGTON — The Afghan Taliban called Monday on Bangladesh to reject a US request that it send troops to assist coalition forces fighting in Afghanistan, the monitoring service SITE said.

Dhaka's foreign ministry said Sunday it was weighing the request which was made by US envoy Richard Holbrooke during talks in New York with Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dipu Moni.

SITE said the Afghan Taliban responded by posting messages in Arabic and Pashto on its website and jihadist forums calling on Dhaka to spurn the US request.

"(We) believe that the leader of Bangladesh has enough Islamic knowledge and political wit not to involve his people in the fight against Islam and against the Afghan people by sending a few hundred soldiers to Afghanistan," the message said.

"Assuming that the leader would commit such a historic mistake, the religious Muslim people of Bangladesh will not allow their leaders to assist the eternal enemy of Islam against an Islamic neighboring country."

Muslim-majority Bangladesh is a major contributor to United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world, but has no troops in Afghanistan.

Akash57, Bangladeshi, #215 posting an article from the news in Oct 2010 where the Taliban threatened Bangladesh (though they do not threaten Turkey).

Its not 'his' but 'her'!!!! I think Taliban will be more angry when they will hear that BD is headed by a lady!

Indian poster "Kinetic" who lives in Afghanistan, #211

Oh my God! Why Taliban thinks we will go only to fight them? Combat troops may also be needed to protect the rear of those troops who would be building schools and roads, and would be doing other social works in Afghanistan.

I think, Talibans are making unusual noise about the possibility of BD troops deployment. But, let us see what our civilian govt decides. Considering the mindset of our military top brass, I do not think they will refuse to do their job if ordered.

Eastwatch, #216, quite ignorant of the Afghan reality and the nature of the Taliban.

Turkey has very limited number of troops, and they are mostly engaged in humanitarian issues rather than a direct fight with the Taliban. But they still come under fire from the taliban side constantly, i think some people have already posted some of those videos here.

Bangladesh should NOT send troops to Afghanistan on US request. This is against people's sentiment.

Civilians are killed indiscriminately in Afghanistan due to bombings from US and NATO planes and drones. They bomb everything they suspect and at will. They have bombed on civilian homes, schools, wedding ceremony, large gathering of people in family occasion etc.

What significant things US presence have done to Afghanistan? To be honest NOTHING. Afghanistan is still an unstable country after almost 10 years they arrived here. Bangladeshi forces can't to anything under this kind of US and NATO command.

Let not forget, The United Nations did not authorize the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan.

Bangladeshi forces are well-known and well-respected for their participation in UN Peace missions. This is NOT a UN Peace mission. This is a US led civilian killing mission.

Post 266 Romel posts pictures and links to US atrocities against Afghan civilians and children.

Inna lillahe wa inna ilaihe razeun. May Allah grant them eternal peace and Paradise. Very shocked to see the photographs. There must many hundreds of such photographs. So, I must repeat, BD should not send under useless NATO banner. Rather, it should propose a Sunni Muslim troops under UN banner.

@ It is the intention of US government that Bangladesh to deploy troops in Afganistan. But the fact is Bangladesh is not going to deploy troops in Afganistan under NATO command. Apparrently it seens that govt is taking initiative but at the end of the day there will be no deployment. How can Bangladesh directly deny to US govt's request ? See Pakistan, is she not indirectly hepling NATO forces for their logistics ?

@ In 2004, US Secretary of State also requested Bangladesh govt to deploy troops in Iraq but we did not deploy. So, the point is killed now.

The above comments are from defence.pk

Anyway Bangladesh declined to send troops and then both the American and Bangladeshi governments pretended that such a request was never made. Then 12 months later the US renews this, knowing full well that Bangladesh has been threatened by the Taliban and there are Pakistani organizations in Bangladesh which are pro-Taliban such as Lashkar e Toiba.

Another forum, which is far more important than defence.pk is bdmilitary.com, and there was outright hostility and intense opposition to the mere idea of sending Bangladeshi troops to Afghanistan.

I doubt that such a thing will ever happen.
