If you are a fan of motor racing, get set for some high-octane action. In 45 days India will be on the Formula 1 circuit. And people of Coimbatore are already in a flap about this. They can’t wait for October 31 to dawn, the day on which the first Indian Grand Prix will be run at the Buddh international circuit in Noida, UP.
The event is said to have suffered a minor setback when Customs threatened to hold the imports of cars and racing equipment unless a caution deposit of duties running into several hundred crores of rupees is paid. However, JPSI (Jaypee Sports India), the organization hosting the global event, has assured that nothing will stop the event that will see India joining the world of motor racing.
Coimbatore, known as the motor sport hub of the nation, will be joining in all the fun and high speed excitement. Hundreds of Coimbatoreans will be watching the race live in Noida.
The Bijoy brothers, Amith and Ashwanth, who are huge fans of Ferrari booked their tickets well in advance. They have been eagerly awaiting D-Day. The younger brother, Amith, shared his excitement, saying, “Everything — tickets, accommodation — has been arranged months in advance considering the scale of the event which will be attracting people from all over the world.”
Amith says, quite logically, “the best part is having a racer from our city taking part in the event, Narain Karthikeyan will be driving for Hispania Racing and we want to cheer him on. Being an Indian and watching an Indian, that too from Coimbatore, take part in such an event makes us Coimbatoreans very proud.” He adds, “I am also hopeful that Force India will do well in the event”.
Sunil Tukrel, an ardent Formula1 fan, says he will be taking time off from work to attend.
“I can’t wait to experience the event. This is the first time I will be watching one live. The sounds of the cars and shifting of gears has to be experienced firsthand. The seats I have are the best, which are at the end of the stretch and a point where the drivers will be trying overtake each other. To watch these cars zip by at speeds over 300kms is something I am looking forward to the most,” concludes Sunil.
Narain Karthikeyan can’t wait to squeeze into his HRT machine and do some hot laps at the Buddh International Circuit, the venue of the Indian GP. “I have always worn my heart on my sleeve whenever I represented the country. My helmet has been painted tri-colour ever since I made my international debut in 1996. To drive in front of a home crowd is going to be the happiest moment in my racing career."
"I am looking forward to a big support. Since it’s the first race in the country, I know a lot of fans will be expecting me to do well. Driving on my home soil, there would be so much pressure on me. I will be driving for one of the low-budget teams in F1. However, I will put my best foot forward and try to get the best out of my car,” said the Padma Shree awardee.
