  • India rebuffs China's objections to oil exploration in Vietnam

NEW DELHI: India today dismissed Chinese objections over its oil exploration projects in two Vietnamese blocks in the South China Sea, saying its cooperation with Vietnam was as per international laws and it would like the cooperation to grow.

Noting that there was an active programme of trade and economic cooperation with Vietnam, External Affairs Ministry official Spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said cooperation in the area of energy, hydrocarbon as well as renewable energy was one of the important facets of it.

He was replying to a question on China asking India and other countries to refrain from oil exploration in maritime areas offered by Vietnam in the South China Sea, claiming it enjoys "indisputable sovereignty" there.

He said ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) has been in Vietnam for quite sometime in offshore oil and natural gas exploration field and that they were in the process of further expanding cooperation and operation and Essar, a subsidiary of Essar oil Ltd, has also been awarded a gas block in Vietnam.

"This is one important area of cooperation and we would like this area of cooperation to grow. Our cooperation with Vietnam or with any other country for that matter in the world is always as per as international laws, norms and conventions," Prakash said.

He also reiterated India's position that New Delhi "supports freedom of navigation in South China Sea and hopes that all parties to the dispute would abide by the 2002 declaration of conduct in South China Sea."

The issues are expected to find a place in the Joint Commission Meeting, to be co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna along with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh, in Hanoi tomorrow.

India to deepen energy ties with Vietnam, defying China claim

India said it is intensifying energy cooperation with Vietnam on a day China claimed “indisputable sovereignty” over the South China Sea and asked countries in the region to refrain from oil exploration in its waters.

Foreign minister S.M. Krishna on Thursday went to the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi to chair a joint commission meeting on trade, economy, science and technology cooperation with his Vietnamese counterpart.

“We have a very active programme of trade and economic cooperation with Vietnam,” foreign ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said in New Delhi. “One facet of this cooperation is cooperation in the area of hydrocarbons.”

State-controlled ONGC Videsh Ltd has a “major joint venture” in Vietnam for offshore oil and gas exploration, he said. “They are in the process of further expanding their cooperation and operations in Vietnam.”

Prakash said an Essar Oil subsidiary has also been awarded an oil and gas block. “This is one area of cooperation and we would like to see this cooperation grow,” he said.

China and India, the world’s fastest growing major economies, are competing for energy resources in various regions to fuel their growth.

Prakash’s comments came hours after Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said, “China enjoys indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea... China’s stand is based on historical facts and international law.”

Jiang’s remarks were in response to reports that ONGC Videsh Ltd planned to undertake oil exploration in two Vietnam blocks in the South China Sea. When pointed out that India’s stand was guided by Vietnam’s claim that it had rights over the blocks under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas, Jiang said China’s sovereign rights and positions were formed in the course of history, the PTI news agency reported. “China is ready to engage in peaceful negotiations and friendly consultations to peacefully solve the disputes... We hope the relevant countries respect China’s position,” she said.

China and Vietnam are among at least 10 countries that hold competing claims over the South China Sea and the islands in its waters. In June, tension flared between China and Vietnam over the Spratly and Paracel Islands, following clashes between Chinese and Vietnamese boats.

Earlier this month, Prakash said Indian naval ship Airavat, which had paid a friendly visit to Vietnam in July, was issued a warning by radio against entering Chinese waters. However, the ship proceeded on its journey towards another Vietnamese port without incident, he said.

“India supports freedom of navigation in international waters, including in the South China Sea, and the right of passage in accordance with accepted principles of international law. These principles should be respected by all,” Prakash said.

Such incidents happen because the issue of the sovereignty of the South China Sea has not been settled, said Sujit Dutta, a China expert at the Jamia Millia Islamia university.

“In the absence of an agreement, China’s actions are uncalled for and just give rise to another tension area between India and China,” Dutta said. “The Chinese action is also a manifestation of the kind of challenges a rising China poses to the region and the world.”

It will be interesting to see how the dragon, the master of geo-political chess, will play this.

        - They won in the Korean peninsula when the US tried to ignite war there and provoke North Korea.

        - They apparently warned the American regime that any attack on Pakistan would be considered an attack on China, and there are reports that the dragon may have suggested nuclear retaliation. I am not a fan of Pakistan, but I am pro-Chinese and dislike the American regime and its global bullying.

        - The US and west removed their friend Gaddafi (material found in his buildings show close friendship between him and US & UK intelligence) and reduced Chinese influence, 30-40,000 Chinese had to leave in a country where they investe billions.

However the dragon is clever and has taken its revenge economically with not supporting the Greek and other PIIGS economies and the weakening of Europe, so in other words this was a pyrhic "victory" for the US/EU, but the dragon came out on top.

        - So far nothing major yet from the dragon, except Chinese troops going in to Indian territory in Ladakh, Kashmir and destroying two Indian army bunkers, a day or two ago.

The dragon is the master of psychological warfare, patience, not succumbing to provocation and so forth.

Whilst US fleets patrol international waters such as the Arabian gulf, Indian Ocean where they play a key part in the global US killing machine, China if it even moves a ship off its costs is accused of "aggression" by the American regime.

The American regime wants to turn all of China's south-east Asian neighbours against her. The dragon however knows that the demise of the US is happening (though not as fast as some think) and the US will not be able to promote its agenda of destabilizing Asia for too long. It seems the dragon instead of accepting American bullying is not backing down from its legitimate claims over its territorial waters.

American weakness is being highlighted that Vietnam is calling upon India for back up in this clash rather than Uncle Sam.

The US has been killing, raping, torturing, burning, plundering, genociding, lying, falsifying for centuries and it is good to see the world's biggest terrorist state getting weaker and weaker.

Bangladesh, is probably the biggest defeat in US history. America was giving arms, and support to its client, Pakistan to kill and rape Bangladeshi civlians, and despite US support for Pakistan, Bangladeshis were able to win and gain their independence.

        US defeats include:

        Cuba - Bay of pigs.

        Somalia - Blackhawk down.

Iran - seizure of US embassy and shooting down of US helicopter.

Vietnam - defeat of the US by brave and heroic Vietnamese.

Afghanistan - Planned US withdrawal from the country.

Lebanon - US troops left the country after a bomber destroyed a US marine base.

Georgia - When the US incited Georgia to attack Ossetians in Russia, only for Russia to strike back and demolish Georgia.

Bangladesh - US was supporting Pakistan and its brutal military ruler, Yahya Khan to kill Bangladeshis and destroy Bangladeshi independence. The US was defeated and Bangladesh exists today, as a vibrant Muslim country.

        America's bay of pigs fiasco.

Somalis beating a captured American soldier in 1993.

Iranians capture US embassy staff, the United States regime had been interfering in the country and supporting the Shah and his brutal secret police, SAVAK.

US helicopter shot down by Iranians during the revolution.

Terrorists. American terrorists who as part of the US global military and terror machine were shot down in Iran, in the US' terrorist operation: Operation Claw eagle.

Americans escape from Vietnam from their embassy in Saigon, after they had killed millions of Vietnamese and bombed Laos and Cambodia with napalm.

Terrorists: American terrorists after the destruction of a US marine base in Lebanon in 1983. The US withdrew its terrorist forces afterwards.

US defeated in 2008: America incited Georgia to attack Ossetians (who speak the closest language to Pashto). Ossetians peaded for Russian help and the Russian bear crushed the US-backed Georgian army.

Ossetian protestors outside NATO HQ, South Ossetia was attacked by US client Georgia. Georgian troops commited war crimes. Poster of US secretary of state and war criminal, Condoleeza Rice.

Bengalis celebrate in 1971 after defeating US backed Pakistani troops. Pakistani troops had massacred civilians, raped women and girls, destroyed mosques and Qurans and run prostitution. The US was supporting them in the 9 month war and was about to send the 7th US fleet in to the bay of Bengal to support Pakistani troops in their illegal war against Bangladesh.

US backed military commander, Niazi surrenders, as US-backed Pakistan surrenders. A defeat of Pakistan and the US which had trained, financed, armed and supported Pakistan with American dollars, military equipment and political support.

US president Nixon with Yahya Khan, both worked together to prevent Bangladeshi independence and were defeated.

Yahya Khan held group sex orgies in Pakistan as supreme commander of Pakistani forces whilst Muslim Bengalis were being killed and raped in 1971. Yahya Khan suffered the humiliation of the 1971 defeat and was immediately removed by young officers with the threat of a coup. Nixon too was removed from office with the Watergate scandal.

Bangladesh exists free and independent today and alongside Somalis, Afghans, Vietnamese, Iranians, Lebanese, Cubans and others has defeated the greatest terrorist state the world has known, the USA.
