Several US soldiers injured in Wardak suicide bombing | Pajhwok Afghan NewsSeveral US soldiers injured in Wardak suicide bombing

by Pajhwok Report on 10 September, 2011 - 20:39 MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): Hours ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, several American soldiers were wounded in a suicide attack in central Afghanistan on Saturday evening.
Taliban insurgents detonated an explosives-laden truck near a joint Afghan-coalition base in the Syedabad district of Maidan Wardak province at 5.30pm, the governor's spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Shahidullah Shahid said at least one Afghan worker on the base -- which came under similar attack last year -- was killed and more than 10 others were wounded in the truck bombing.
Shahid had no information regarding US causalities, but a security official said on condition of anonymity that 10 American soldiers and as many Afghans were among the injured.
A source in the Regional Command-East press office acknowledged that several US military officials were wounded in the suicide assault.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said a Hino truck containing 10 tonnes of explosives was used for the assault. He added heavy causalities were inflicted on foreign forces.

    NATO base attacked in Afghanistan
    Sun Sep 11, 2011 2:12AM GMT

A truck bomb attack on a military base used by the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in eastern Afghanistan has caused significant injuries.

A bomber detonated his explosives-laden car at the entrance to Combat Outpost Sayed Abad in Wardak province late on Saturday.

No NATO soldiers were killed in the attack and none of the injuries from the attack on the combat outpost was life threatening, the Associated Press cited a statement issued by the Western military alliance as saying.

“Most of the force of the explosion was absorbed by the protective barrier at the outpost entrance and though there were a significant number of injuries, all are being treated and none is immediately life threatening,” the statement said.

However, NATO did not announce how many people were injured in the incident.

According to official figures posted on the website icasualties.org, a total of 429 foreign troops have lost their lives in war-torn Afghanistan so far this year.

Last year, nonetheless, remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties with a death toll of 711. The number eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

Taliban claims responsibility for truck bomb in which 89
people, including 77 soldiers, were injured

At least 77 Nato soldiers have been wounded after a suicide bomber drove an
explosives-filled truck to a military base and detonated it.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing, on the eve of the 10th anniversary
of the September 11 attacks, making it one of the bloodiest days of the Afghan
      conflict.

The blast tore a six-metre (20ft) hole in the wall of the base, in the Sayed Abad
district of the eastern province of Wardak. The explosives were set off about 75
metres from the entrance to the base, and the truck was filled with nine tonnes of
explosives, the Taliban said in a message to journalists.

It is believed many of the victims were injured by a fire caused by the explosion,
which happened at 5pm local time (12.30pm GMT) on Saturday.

A US army spokesman, Major David Eastburn, said 50 US soldiers were among a total
of 89 wounded, but a separate source put the number of wounded at 77, with 59 of
those having to be taken by Medevac helicopter to nearby bases.

A statement from the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said:
"All are being treated, and none is immediately life-threatening." The nationalities of
      the other injured were unknown.

Most of the force of the explosion was absorbed by the protective barrier at the
outpost entrance, but the impact to the compound was "readily repairable and
operations are continuing", the statement said.

Recent high-profile insurgent attacks have often used suicide bombs to commence
complex attacks, but ISAF said there was no attempt by others to enter the base.

In the Sayed Abad district, about 45 miles south-west of Kabul, insurgents used
rocket-propelled grenades to bring down a helicopter last month, killing 38 people
      including 30 US soldiers.

Militants also attacked the US military's main airport in Afghanistan with rockets.

The attack on Bagram airfield killed two Afghan security guards and wounded seven
other people, including three US soldiers, a military source said.

Two bomb attacks in the country's east and north killed 10 civilians on Saturday,
including three women and two children, local officials said. Despite the carnage, the
10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks was being marked at a ceremony at
the US embassy in Kabul, with talk of progress being made.

"The last 10 years have not been easy … both the international coalition and Afghans
have endured much hardship," the commander of foreign military forces in Afghanistan,
      General John Allen, said.

"We have reversed the momentum of the insurgents. On this sacred day of
remembrance, I can say with confidence that, together, we're on the path of success
      in Afghanistan."

It seems this didn't do much irrepairable damage. None of those US troops
were fatally injured apparently and no US troops were killed.

Can anyone confirm where in Sayedabad this outpost was?

A massive bomb blast at a US-run military base in troubled eastern Afghanistan has wounded at least 77 American soldiers, NATO says.

The US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization confirmed on Sunday that the Taliban bomb attack had left at least 77 American soldiers wounded in Afghanistan's eastern province of Wardak late on Saturday.

NATO's confirmation comes after the US army said 50 American troops had been injured in the attack.

The Western military alliance said in a statement that the attacker was driving a truck carrying firewood and detonated his explosives at an entry point to the base.

"Most of the force of the explosion was absorbed by the protective barrier at the outpost entrance and though there were a significant number of injuries ... none is immediately life threatening," the NATO statement read.

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the attack, saying scores of US soldiers were killed.

Afghan officials say the attack also left two Afghan civilians dead and 25 others injured.

In a separate development, a NATO soldier died in a militant ambush in southern Afghanistan. Two bombs also exploded in Paktika and Kunduz Provinces, leaving a total of 10 civilians dead.

they first said no foreigners were injured, but then a Kabul official confirmed that there were injuries.

I doubt it was just injuries. Usually, what they do is take them, and let them die in Germany. That way they don't count it.

MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): Five Afghan workers were killed and 102 people, including 77 US soldiers, wounded in a suicide bombing in central Maidan Wardak province, officials said on Sunday.
A significant number of ISAF and Afghan civilians were injured as a result of the vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack at approximately 5:30pm on the combat outpost in Syedabad district on Saturday evening, the alliance said.
"Seventy-seven NATO-led personnel received non-life-threatening injuries. The majority of injured ISAF personnel will likely return to duties shortly," the force said in a statement.
The perimeter wall and a maintenance facility on the base were damaged in the attack, according to the ISAF statement, which said protective barriers around the site absorbed much of the explosion.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said late on Saturday that a Hino truck containing 10 tonnes of explosives was used for the assault. He added that more than 50 US soldiers had suffered causalities.
Eighty-nine people, including 50 American troops, were wounded in the attack, the US Army Regional Command-East press office acknowledged. The victims were evacuated to hospital and their condition is stable, it added.
The suicide attacker detonated an explosives-laden truck near the joint Afghan-coalition base in the district, the governor's spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Shahid said four civilians, including an 8-year-old girl, and a policeman, were killed and 14 others wounded in the attack. The explosion targeted a US military base near the district centre, completely destroying the district headquarters and a nearby health clinic.
He said the vehicle used in the attack was a Kamaz truck, in which firewood was placed over the explosives. It was the first single incident over the past 10 years that inflicted so many casualties on US forces.
In the past month, 31 US Special Force members were killed after the Taliban downed their Chinook chopper in the same district.

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on a military base used by US-led NATO forces in eastern Afghanistan, saying scores of US soldiers were killed and wounded in the attack.

The incident occurred when a militant bomber driving a truck attacked an advance combat outpost used by the US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan's eastern Wardak Province.

This is while US Army spokesman Major David Eastburn said on Sunday that 50 American soldiers were among a total of 89 people injured in the attack.

"It happened at 5:15 pm on Saturday. It detonated near the entry point at a combat outpost, resulting in 89 wounded in action and a 20-foot [six-meter] hole in the wall," Eastburn said.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack, saying scores of US soldiers were killed in the attack.

August 2011 became the deadliest month for US troops in the decade-long war in Afghanistan with 66 American soldiers killed in the month.

On August 6, at least 31 US Special Forces were killed after Taliban militants shot down an American helicopter belonging to NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Wardak Province.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces in the war-torn country.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

No, those who "died of wounds" are still reported. They go to Germany for the medical treatment.
