    Drought hits 200,000
    Families in Afghanistan

Around 200,000 families have been hit by drought nationwide,
Afghan Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) said
    on Sunday.

Officials in MAIL said while wheat crop has been the same compared to last
year, but poor harvest of rain-fed wheat in a number of provinces has
    caused food shortages.

MAIL is planning to start grain distribution to destitute people from
northern Jowzjan province, which seems to have been hit by drought.

Under the plan MAIL will distribute 50,000 tonnes of cereal to drought
affected people. The International Community will also be urged to help
    supply food to hardly-hit regions.

"The outreach programmes will first begin in regions where cultivation of
rain-fed wheat has been severely hit by drought," Agriculture Minister,
    Mohammad Asef Rahimi, said.

According to predictions made by MAIL, Afghanistan this year needs more
than six million tonnes of cereal to overcome drought.

saw a doco last night that was all about how much water is used for crops and meat production. scary. they were saying how water is such a precious resounse and how, in the future, some predict that wars will be fought over it.
we have a low water count in australia and for many years we have had restrictions on it's usage. eg; i can only water the garden 3 days a week and with the toilet some practice, 'if it's brown, flush it down. if it's yellow, let it mellow';-) not flushing each time after wee. the huge amounts of water that gets used in toilets, is insane.
