Pakistani officials say hundreds of militants from Afghanistan have targeted several Pakistani check posts in the border region, killing at least 36 people.

The attacks began in Arando village in Pakistan's northwestern district of Chitral, near Afghanistan's Nuristan province. Militants then attacked more areas near the border, officials added.

The fighting included casualties on the militants' side, but officials did not say how many.

It comes as the US recently increased pressure on Pakistan to take more decisive steps against militants since US Navy SEALS found and killed al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in Pakistani in May.

Troops of the Chitral Scouts and police were among the dead in the string of attacks that began with an assault on paramilitary check posts in the border region.

Pakistani officials said that the militants then attacked more areas near the border, including civilian populations, triggering clashes with the security forces.

The attack happened as a delegation of four Democrats of the US senate visiting Islamabad are putting pressure on Pakistani leaders to help crack down on the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by extremists across the border in Afghanistan.

The delegation includes Senators Sheldon Whitehouse, Michael Bennet, Richard Blumenthal and Bob Casey, The Talk Radio News Service reports.

"The focus is on our troops serving in Afghanistan who are the victims of roadside bombs," Casey told reporters in a conference in Pakistan.

Militants from Afghanistan attack Pakistani posts

      REUTERS

      By Gul Hamaad Farooqi

      CHITRAL, Pakistan | Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:11pm BST

CHITRAL, Pakistan (Reuters) - Several hundred militants from Afghanistan launched a pre-dawn cross-border raid on Pakistani paramilitary posts on Saturday, killing up to 36 people, government and security officials said.
Pakistan's support is crucial to U.S. efforts to stabilise Afghanistan, but cross-border raids have raised tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent months.
Soldiers of the Chitral Scouts and police were among the dead in the string of attacks that began with an assault on paramilitary check posts in the border village of Arandu in the Chitral district just across from Afghanistan's Nuristan province.
"Reportedly, terrorists from Swat, Dir and Bajaur organised by Fazullah and Maulvi Faqir Mohammad with local Afghans have attacked the security forces posts," a military statement said, referring to northwestern Pakistani regions and senior Pakistani Taliban commanders.
Many Pakistani Taliban fighters fled to Afghanistan in the face of army offensives and have joined allies there to regroup and threaten Pakistani border regions, analysts say.
The military operations in the country's northwest have inflicted heavy losses on them, but insurgents have proved resilient with intermittent attacks and suicide bombings.
A senior Chitral Scouts official, Haroon Rasheed, said 26 soldiers and 10 border police were killed.
Twenty militants were also reportedly killed when up to 300 insurgents attacked seven military check posts, the military statement said. There was no independent verification of the militant death toll.
The military statement put the security forces death toll at least 25.
Troops blew up two bridges in the border region to stem the militants' incursion.
"Scanty presence" of NATO and Afghan forces along the border has enabled militants to use these areas as safe havens and launch repeated attacks inside Pakistan, the military said.
Twenty-seven Pakistani servicemen were killed and 45 militants died in clashes in July when some 600 militants from Afghanistan attacked two Pakistani villages in Dir.
Pakistani Taliban later claimed responsibility for the Dir attack, part of seemingly new militant strategy of carrying out large-scale attacks on government and army targets.
Militants have largely relied on a campaign of suicide and bomb attacks that have killed thousands of people across the country.
Pakistan has blamed Afghanistan for giving refuge to militants on its side of the border.
On Saturday, the country's foreign office summoned the Afghan charge d'affaires to lodge a protest over the cross-border raid.
"It is Pakistan's expectations that ISAF and the Afghan National Army would take effective measures to prevent such incursions by militants from safe havens across the border," a foreign office spokesperson said in a statement.
Kabul has also blamed Pakistan in recent months for killing dozens of civilians in cross-border shelling.

When attacks happen in Pakistan by 'Afghan Taliban' then it's always and only reported by Pakistani officials; Afghan Taliban very clearly deny it. When attacks in Afghanistan by 'Pakistani Taliban' happen then it's always and only reported by Afghan officials; Pakistani Taliban very clearly deny it.

In both Pakistani and Afghan governments' words:

Afghan Taliban are meant to fight the NATO and their supporters in Afghanistan; They ended up killing more Pakistanis than Afghan officers co-operating with NATO. Pakistani Taliban are meant to fight the Pakistani government; They ended killing more Afghans than Pakistani officials.

In short, am I the only one to whom these 'cross-border attacks' makes no sense, nor see any point in it?

                    It is complex.

Afghan Taliban fight only to free their country from the occupation.

Pakistani Taliban fight Pakistan due to its alliance with the US and also to install a Sharia state in what is Pakistan. Those were their stated goals.

To some degree it is a nationalist movement.

The cross-border attacks are something to examine.

Way back when there was attacks in Dir, the US/indian/pakistani secular media tried to say Afghan Taliban were behind it. Now keep in mind that Afghan Taliban have no love for Pakistan. Common imediate interests are just that.for anyone to suggest they were behind it is preposterous. Usually there is a slick wickedness in this suggestion. They (the US and others) want Pakistan to conduct a full scale operation against Pashtuns.

Its just a matter of time when the islamic emirate of afghanistan will capture afghanistan and the ttp captures pakistan , while ttp is ally of the afghan taliban they will make it a single islamic state with atom bombs.

It is a well organised attack. So far the fight is continue.
These are not afghans or afghan talibans. The attackers are pashtuns from momand and bajawor agency.
                        There is some confusion too.
Pakistani authorities are famous for the blame game and most of the time they kill their own soldiers for that.
The soldiers died are local chetrali people.
This could be a nationalist attack against pakistan by the pashtunistan libration front. The waaly of kunar enjoy good relation with these elements.
Pakistan is losing control over pashtunkhwa.
The police and security forcs are too scared to work in pashtunkhwa.
The govt is by name. There are little signs of pakistan in pashtun soil.
There is great chance pakistan on the fall.

25 Pak soldiers killed in cross-border attack

                              * 20 terrorists also killed as 200-300 Afghan-based ‘terrorists’ attack 7 FC posts in Chitral

                              * Military says intelligence about presence of Pakistani, Afghan terrorists had been passed to NATO, Afghan authorities but no worthwhile action was taken

ISLAMABAD: Taliban fighters killed 25 Pakistani troops in a cross-border raid Saturday, the military said, blaming alleged inaction by Afghanistan and NATO in the latest flaring of tensions between the neighbours.
Some 200 to 300 “terrorists” based in Afghanistan attacked seven paramilitary Frontier Corps checkposts in the northwestern district of Chitral early Saturday morning, Pakistan’s military said in a statement.
The term “terrorists” is frequently used by the military for Taliban and al Qaeda-linked militants. The military said both Pakistani and Afghan fighters were involved. “At least 25 security forces personnel embraced shahadat (martyrdom) in the attack,” the statement said, adding that the attack was launched “from across the border”. About 20 of the militants were believed to have been killed. The border posts were overrun by militants, but reinforcements have now been sent, it said.
The Pakistani military said that those believed to have co-ordinated the raid – including a radical cleric from the Swat valley, Maulana Fazlullah, and a Pakistani Taliban commander from Bajaur, Faqir Muhammad - had previously fled into Afghanistan in the face of Pakistani military offensives.
“Since their expulsion from their native areas, the terrorists have organised themselves in Kunar and Nuristan provinces with the support of local Afghan authorities,” the military’s statement said.
It said the “scanty presence of NATO and ANA (Afghan National Army) forces” along the border had led to “safe havens” for militants on the Afghan side, allowing them to launch attacks in Pakistan.
Intelligence about the presence of Pakistani militants and their Afghan supporters had been passed to NATO and Afghan authorities, the statement said.
“But no worthwhile action has been taken against the terrorists and attack against Pakistani border posts have continued with impunity,” it said. It was the latest in a series of alleged cross-border incidents, many of which have raised tensions between the neighbours as the Afghan war continues to claim a high toll after almost 10 years. afp
