Blast kills Polish soldier in Afghanistan
    Fri Aug 19, 2011 1:24AM GMT

PressTV - Blast kills Polish soldier in Afghanistan

A roadside bomb blast has killed one Polish trooper in Afghanistan, bringing to 29 the number of the servicemen, who have died since the launch of the US-led war in the violence-hit country.

The explosion killed the 28-year-old victim named Sergeant Szymon Sitarczuk in the central province of Ghazni on Friday, AFP reported.

Another Polish soldier and two Afghan police officers were also injured in the incident and were evacuated to a hospital in the Polish base by a helicopter.

After the blast, Polish troops were engaged in a firefight with alleged militants.

Poland has nearly 2,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's security remains fragile, despite the presence of around 150,000 United States-led foreign forces there.

The rising number of foreign casualties has stoked opposition among the Western military alliance of NATO's member states to the Afghan war, which has been raging on since 2001.

Double explosions hit Kabul near British compound

BBC News - Double explosions hit Kabul near British compound

18 August 2011 Last updated at 23:05 ET Double explosions hit Kabul near British compound

Two explosions have hit the Afghan capital, Kabul, near a compound run by the British government.
The first blast went off at 05:38 (01:08 GMT), with a second 10 minutes later; sporadic gunfire was also heard.
The British Council was the target of the attacks, a spokesman for the Nato-led force was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.
Unconfirmed reports say there were casualties. The Taliban later said they carried out the attack.
The explosions were caused by suicide attacks, Kabul's police chief Ayub Salangi told the AFP news agency.
"(There were) two explosions at the British Council but at this stage, we're still gathering facts," said Maj Jason Waggoner, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force, according to AFP.
Smoke can be seen rising from the area, the BBC's Masoud Popalzai says.
The British Embassy in Kabul has so far made no comment.
Friday is a national holiday in Afghanistan, marking the country's independence from Great Britain in 1919
