Chinese trains to ply Dhaka next year

    The Daily Star/Asia News Network
    Friday, Aug 05, 2011
Modern trains will be introduced in Dhaka and Chittagong by the next year to make commuting with their adjoining districts fast and easier.
Bangladesh Railway (BR) and Tangshan Railway Vehicle Company Ltd, a Chinese private firm, inked an agreement on the $58.31 million (S$70.7 million) project at the railway headquarters in the capital yesterday.
The railway will procure 20 sets of diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU), a multiple carriage train, from the Chinese company.
The service will be available on seven routes -- Dhaka-Joydevpur, Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Bhairab Bazar, Chittagong-Feni, Chittagong-Nazirhat and Chittagong-Dohazari -- by the end of the next year.
Project Director Saidur Rahman said DEMU trains will be introduced later on two northern routes -- Dinajpur-Parbatipur-Rangpur and Lalmonirhat-Parbatipur-Saidpur.
"The service will be introduced first in the Dhaka zone and then in other regions in phases," he said.
The commuter trains with at least 300 seats each travel at a speed of 80 kilometres an hour.
DEMU trains are fitted with electric traction motors powered by an on-board diesel engine, and don't require any overhead electric lines.
Such trains are suitable for areas with high traffic density or suburban areas. DEMU trains are in operation in many countries including neighbouring India.
"The Chinese company has affirmed that it will finish the entire project within the next 15 months. We will introduce the train service as soon as we receive the diesel-electric multiple units," Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain told reporters after the signing of the agreement.
Replying to a query, Abul Hossain said the government has taken initiative to modernise the country's largest railway workshop in Saidpur of Nilphamari.

BR to launch 10 new commuter train services late next year
It signs $57.31m deal with Chinese firm

    Munima Sultana

Bangladesh Railway will launch 10 new commuter train services from late next year in an effort to ease crippling gridlock on the roads, officials said Thursday.

Communication minister Syed Abul Hossain made the announcement in the city after the state-owned train service provider signed a $57.31 million deal to purchase 20 sets of commuter trains from a Chinese company.

Tangsung Railway Vehicle Company of China will supply the trains, called Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMO), in 15 months and the commuter services will be introduced later next year on 10 different routes, mostly in Dhaka and Chittagong.

BR Director General Abu Taher and TRVC Deputy Managing Director Jhen Daew signed the contract at Railway Bhaban in presence of the communication minister and Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xianyi.

The minister said the latest BR initiative would ease daily hassles for the office-goers and the workers who have to travel hours on buses to attend offices and factories.

According to a Japanese aid agency study, five million commuters travel to Dhaka and its suburbs every day to attend work and most have to ride buses and minibuses as the capital lacks commuter train services like most other cities in the world.

The minister said the new service will also help improve the BR's services and capacity and relieve the country's congested roads of some pressures.

Each DEMO, which is a set of two engines on both sides with three coaches, will have the capacity to carry 300 passengers on every route, according to the railway officials.

    BR has planned to launch the services on Dhaka-Joydevpur, Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Narayanganj, Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Bhairab Bazar, Chittagong-Feni, Chittagong-Nazirhat, Chittagong-Dohazari, Dinajpur-Parbatipur-Rangpur, Lalmonirhat-Parbatipur-Syedpur routes.

Several railway officials, however, doubted whether the commuter services would bring any tangible benefit to traffic management in the capital and the port city of Chittagong.

They said the two cities mostly have single track rail line, which is not suitable for commuter services and may hamper regular train services

Railway lines also intersect busy points in the capital, meaning they will likely cause more gridlock roads if the commuter services are intensively introduced.

"Unless we lay double tracks in the two cities, the commuter service won't do much to ease jams," said an official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The BR has already undertaken a project to lay double tracks between Dhaka and its northern suburb of Joydevpur.

Bangladesh's Railway Inks Train Procurement Contract with Chinese Company
2011-08-04 18:10:14 Xinhua Web Editor: liuranran

Bangladesh's Railway signed a 58.31 million U.S. dollars contract on Thursday with Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. Ltd. of China for procurement of 20 sets commuter trains.
Abu Taher, Director General of Bangladesh's Railway, and Zhen Dawei, Deputy General Manager of Tangshan Railway Vehicle, signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides here.
According to the contract, Bangladesh's Railway will purchase 20 sets Meter Gauge Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU). The contract value will be 58.31 million U.S. dollars including spare parts, tools and equipment, training and services.
Syed Abul Hossain, Bangladesh's Communications Minister, Zhang Xianyi, Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka, among others, were present at the contract signing ceremony.
According to Tangshan Railway Vehicle, each set of DEMU, which consists of three units, can carry 300 passengers. The service speed of DEMU is 80 km per hour.
Bangladeshi Communications Minister said at the ceremony that introduction of railway commuter train in the form of DEMU is a special version of train service aiming at reducing traffic congestion of urban and suburban areas and eventually render safe, better and comfortable services to the passengers.
He said that by introducing DEMU, Bangladesh's Railway will enter into a new era of modern train service.
Zhang Xianyi, the Chinese ambassador, said these trains will not only help to improve the railway system of Bangladesh, but also will help to speed up the development of the Bangladeshi economy.

                    1. It is arguable as to which country helps Bangladesh the most, but it is not:

                    The Muslim world.
                    The West.

It is the east Asian states. Some say China helps us the most, something which is undisputable in the military context. One Bangladeshi I know said it is Japan. However business wise I would say the country which invests in us the most is South Korea.

                    2. China has the fastest train in the world, a few months ago had the fastest computer in the world, the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) is moving 1 million people out of poverty a month, China is said to have 150 cities with a population with over 1 million, whereas apparently Europe has 25.

Militarily China is not as strong as the US with China saying they are 20 years behind the US technology wise. However major powers hardly ever wage conventional wars (unless you are the US, e.g. Vietnam, Gulf War 1, Gulf War 2, Afghanistan, Libya) which are expensive, a drain on resources and potentially fatal. War and thus the military is an extension of geo-politics and the Chinese dragon is outsmarting the American eagle. It is only a matter of time and engineering when China catches up with the US in military technology.

China is about to start operating its first aircraft carrier, which unless I'm mistaken will be captained by a Hui Muslim.

Bangladesh is seeking to set up a direct rail connection between China and Bangladesh, with Beijing looking to develop its Yunnan province.

Dhaka is planning to build a mega sea port in Sonadia.

Bangladesh's main port in Chittagong handles about 1 million tonnes a year.

Sonadia will handle 700 times more.

The Bangladeshi economy is already growing at 7% a year, with Chittagong handling 1 million tonnes per year, a deep sea port and land connectivity with China will push this rate of growth. It has been calculated that the Bangladeshi economy is in reality, if the undeclared black economy is countered and if the method of calculation is updated, twice as big as it officially is and if it hit 13% a year (similar to Qatar or Singapore) it could become a $1 trillion economy in 10 years minimum (very ambitious), becoming one of the top 15 economies in the world. This will probably take 15 years time.

Bangladesh in effect will be a semi-Suez canal for China, so China can bypass the Malacca straits route for many things and use a faster, cheaper, easier overland route.

There are people who are interested and "Thank" me.

You are not one of them so avoid the "World Affairs" sub-forum, or any Bangladeshi threads.
