Bangladesh to build four large coal-fired power plants

under News August 16th, 2011 by IFandP Newsroom
The Bangladesh government will build four large imported-coal-based power plants and generate 2400MW of power by 2014 to ensure the country is supplied with electricity in the future at a reasonable cost.
The coal-fired power plants to be built include Chittagong 300-650MW power plant, Munshiganj 300-650MW power plant, Khulna 150-300MW power plant and Chittagong 150-300MW power plant.

“We have already completed evaluation of the planned coal-fired power plants and sent the report to the power ministry for final approval,” Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir told the Financial Express. He did not identify the successful bidders.
The contracts would be awarded to the bid winners immediately after their approval by the power ministry.

The BPDB chairman said the coal-fired power plants would be implemented as part of the government move to diversify the country’s energy sources against the backdrop of dwindling natural gas reserves. “We are now over-dependent on natural gas use, which needs to be diversified to ensure the country’s future energy security,” he said.

The coal-fired power plants would be built near the sea and river shore to facilitate imports of coal. They will be implemented on a build, own and operate (BOO) basis for 25 years.

Bangladesh cannot afford more pollution. Isn't it in danger of being flooded?
