    Flood-hit residents need
    emergency aid

GHAZNICITY(PAN): Residents of two floods-hit districts in southern Ghazni
province are in dire need of emergency relief, officials said on Saturday.

Triggered by heavy rains, the floods washed away thousands of acres of
land in Jaghatu and Khogyani, district chiefs told a joint press conference
    in Ghazni City.

Jaghatu district chief, Mohammad Amin Ahmadi, said agricultural farms,
orchards and houses were damaged in Qyaq, Sorab, Hamda and Torgan
    areas.

Bashi Habibullah, administrative head of Khogyani district, said 80 percent
of crops and orchards had been washed away in Sara Qala, Deh Mullah and
    Perka areas.

Several houses were damaged and six people, including children and
women, wounded, he added. The officials urged the central government to
provide relief to the affected families.

Provincial chief of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority
(ANDMA), Hafizullah Gulistani, said they had appointed a four-member
delegation to assess property losses in the two districts.

"Our department has non-food assistance, such as tents, blankets and
other equipment for only 450 families," he said, adding they lacked
    foodstuffs for flood-hit families.

      KPK Floods kill 16

      Monsoon rains trigger
      floods, kill 16 in Pakistan

People displaced by last year's floods and living in tents are seen after heavy monsoon
rains in Peshawar, Pakistan Thursday, Aug 25, 2011

PESHAWAR: Flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains swept
through a village in northwestern Pakistan, killing 16 people and
leaving several others missing, disaster management officials said
      Thursday.

The floods hit the remote Kundian Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province
Wednesday, destroying houses and other infrastructure, said Syed Asghar
Ali Shah, the acting head of disaster management in the province.

Rescue operations and relief operations have been hampered by bridges
and roads that were damaged last year in the worst flooding in Pakistan’s
history and have not been fixed, said Shah.

Authorities sent two helicopters to help with the operations and hope to
      send another tomorrow, he said.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in the area for at least another 24
hours, according to Pakistan’s meteorological department.

Monsoon rains begin in July in Pakistan and often lead to flooding. The
floods that hit last year inundated about one-fifth of the country _ an area
the size of the United Kingdom _ and affected up to 20 million people.

Experts have warned that many citizens are more vulnerable to flooding
this year because they have not recovered from last year’s tragedy.

InshaAllah we will not see a repeat of what happened last year on that scale.

it's so unfortunate that our farmers can't grow anything because of the lack of water and then floods like this come and takes people's lives with it. the rivers in afghanistan were literally dry this year.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.
