PressTV - Iraq bloc warns US of armed resistance
An Iraqi political bloc has warned that extension of US military presence in the country may prompt the nation to wage an 'armed resistance' against the force.
"The Iraqi people may resort to armed resistance if the occupation forces stay in Iraq," said Hamid al-Mutlaq, a leading figure in the Iraqi Front for National Dialogue, Xinhua reported Monday.
He said "the front rejects any presence for American trainers in Iraq," referring to Washington's demand from the Iraqi government to allow the extension of their military presence in the nation to 'train' Iraqi security forces.
Over one million Iraqis have been killed since 2003 in a US-led occupation and massive war against the country, according to the California-based Project Censored.
The United States is currently exerting pressure on Baghdad in line with its plan to keep thousands of its troops in the country beyond December 31, 2011, when they are bound to withdraw their entire military force from Iraq according to a bilateral treaty.
The US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen recently paid an unannounced visit to Baghdad to lobby Iraqi officials about the extension of American military presence in the country..
He also called on Iraqi officials to grant immunity to American forces in the country against any legal prosecution, which would, in effect, allow them to freely abuse their military power and commit offenses without consequences.
