Updates: Disorder in Hillingdon
Aug 9 2011
4pm Hillingdon Police have issued a lengthy statement on the latest situation, among the measures they have taken include deployment of extra officers, and new stop and search powers:
"The following is a message that the Borough Commander of Hillingdon Police would like to put out to the naturally concerned residents and businesses of Hillingdon Borough. The last few days have seen a shocking and unprecedented wave of public disorder in London, and I would like to take this opportunity to reassure the communities of Hillingdon Borough and condemn the actions of a small minority of mindless individuals.
"During the evening of Monday 8th August and into the early hours of Tuesday 9th August Hillingdon Borough suffered several sporadic incidents of minor vandalism and small scale looting targeting various outlet stores and warehouses, which can possibly be seen as an extension of the more widespread and serious cases of rioting and looting which have taken place in other areas of the London and the country in general.
"During the course of the evening and early morning a number of people have been arrested in Hillingdon for a variety of offences, including burglary, handling stolen goods and affray. These people remain in custody at a number of police stations in London and the police investigations are currently ongoing."
"I have been working with the Council and other agencies and we have drawn up a number of strategies which have been implemented.
"These include significantly increased patrols from uniformed police officers, offering re-assurance to the public; at the same time the increased number of officers will be prepared to act swiftly and decisively to any future outbreaks of public disorder.
"The council have also implemented 24 hour cctv coverage of large areas of the borough to assist as a deterent and for re-assurance.
"As a result of the incidents last night I have implemented a Section 60 Stop and Search authority from 11am on Tuesday 9th August to allow officers to crack down on any potential disorder that may occur and to assist in re-assuring the public.
"This will be reviewed with a probability of it being extended.
"Hillingdon Police will deal with any incidents of violence robustly and swiftly and will not tolerate public disorder disrupting the lives of residents and business people of the borough alike. We will continue to police the borough normally, keeping your homes and businesses safe.
"We will continue to work closely with the local communities and agencies and are grateful for their assistance. I would like to take this opportunity to urge anyone with any information on any crime committed last night or anyone with any intelligence on criminal acts planned in the future on Hillingdon Borough to contact police as soon as possible, or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Your information can be dealt with anonymously."
3.10pm Police have also gathered at the Lombardy Retail Park in Hayes to aim to deter would-be rioters. Shopkeepers in Ruislip have also begun taking precautionary measures with some closing early.
2.45pm Police have been massing outside Uxbridge tube station providing a visible presence to try to deter troublemakers. There are no signs of disorder at this point, although businesses are continuing to take police advice and close early.
For tube travellers, there are delays on the Piccadilly line after an earlier fire in central London.
1.45pm Virgin Active gym, based in Uxbridge High Street, has confirmed it is to shut from 3pm today due to fears of unrest in the area. Many offices in the area have also allowed staff to leave early. Let us know how you have been affected by e-mailing editorialuxbridge@trinitysouth.co.uk
1.20pm Police have issued the following precautionary advice to business owners in the borough:
Where possible retail premises should be suitably staffed with security guards.
Ensure staff report any suspicious activity to security and/or police
Consider regular checks of the building and surrounding area Identify areas that are vulnerable to forced entry
Make sure all service doors are kept locked and secure when not in use
Ensure your CCTV system fully operational In case of an emergency is there a record of the names of keyholders who can be contacted
Consider removing high value goods from display windows overnight
Consider keeping as little cash as possible on the premises
Ensure that your premises are secure and if fitted your alarm systems are fully operational In the event of a non emergency, call the police on non emergency number 101 In the event of an emergency, call the emergency number 999
If you have any information you wish to provide to police anonymously you can contact the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
- Anyone with information about the disorder that has taken place should call the major investigation team on 020 8345 4142.
1.10pm HILLINGDON Council have commented on internet and social networking rumours that Uxbridge town centre could become a target for rioters this afternoon.
There are rumours that people may be coming to Uxbridge town centre later this afternoon to cause trouble. The council is working closely with the police and other partners to put in place plans to deal with any incidents which may occur. Any incidents will be dealt with by the police quickly.
Cllr Ray Puddifoot, Leader of Hillingdon Council, said: "We are working closely with the police to offer them all the support we can, including 24 hour CCTV monitoring across the borough.
"By working together, we will do all we can to help protect Hillingdon from some of the disgraceful, criminal acts we have seen in other parts of London."
There are lots of rumours currently circulating. We will update if things change.
---
TWENTY-SIX people have been arrested following vandalism and small looting in Hayes, Hillingdon Council has reported.
On its website, the council said there have been no reported injuries and it was working with the police to keep the borough safe.
The exact location of incidents in Hayes have not yet been revealed, while South Ruislip retail park was also targeted.
They follow wide-spread violence and looting across London with areas such as Ealing, Hackney and South London seeing groups clashing with police.
Millions of pounds of damage have been caused across the capital and shops, flats and vehicles have been set on fire.
Firefighters from across the borough have been tackling many of the blazes. Crews from Hayes were at the scene of fires in Ealing and Peckham last night and firefighters from Hillngdon Station were called to Croydon at 12.30am and were still on the scene this morning.

It's funny, I'm just about to leave for Lombardy.
It's my brother's birthday, getting him a cake and stuff.
Thanks for the update. Will be interesting to see what happens tonight.---

In youtube videos, I have seen both whites and blacks protesting/rioting.Originally posted by sahil112 View Post
I think the best way to explain this is that it is generally between the poor people and the rich people.
The media doesn't seem to want to say this though.

Just came back.
Hayes is a ghost town fam.
All the stores were shut. In Lombardy the whole car park was empty except for one police van slowly patrolling it.
Went to Sainsbury's and the doors were barricaded with shop shelves.
All the shops nearby were shut too, except Lidl. I go there and they have cake but it had gelatine so I had to make do with some small pathetic tea cake lol
Fair enough, if they want to smash up random buildings but getting the football cancelled and then ruining my bro's birthday?? Nah that's not on.
I would bake him a cake but I don't have the ingredients. Ah, well he isn't spoilt anyway so he won't mind. Still pisses me off though.---
