A roadside bomb has struck a mini-van in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmad, killing all the eighteen people in the vehicle.

"The reports that I've received from the scene indicate that all 18 people in the vehicle have been killed," said deputy police chief Kamaluddin Shirzai on Friday.

The IED (improvised explosive device) exploded on Friday when the vehicle was on route from Nahri Sarrag district to the provincial capital Lashkar Gah, AFP reported.

IEDs, frequently used by the Taliban militants, have been responsible for the majority of civilian and security forces' deaths in the war that is dragging into its tenth year.

The first half of 2011 has been the deadliest six months for Afghan civilians since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a recent report.

More than 1,462 civilians were killed from January to June, indicating a 15-percent increase compared with the same period last year, UNAMA said.

Militants have been responsible for 80 percent of the deaths, up almost a third on the first half of 2010.

The US-led NATO airstrikes have also been a leading cause of civilian causalities, leaving more than 79 Afghans dead in period in question, the report adds.
