US drone attack kills 10 in Pakistan
    Mon Jul 11, 2011 5:35PM

PressTV - US drone attack kills 10 in Pakistan
A non-UN-sanctioned US airstrike has killed at least ten people and wounded several others in Pakistan's troubled tribal belt, officials say.

Local security officials say the missiles fired from a US drone targeted a compound near Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The death toll is expected to rise as some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

The US has stepped up its unauthorized airstrikes in Pakistan since President Barack Obama took office in 2009.

Hundreds of such attacks have hit Pakistan's tribal regions since then, killing large numbers of people.

The UN has condemned the US use of combat drones against other countries as a blatant violation of international law.

Philip Alston, UN special envoy on extrajudicial killings, said in a report in late October 2010 that the attacks were undermining the rules designed to protect the right of life.

Alston also said he feared that the drone killings by the US Central Intelligence Agency could develop a "playstation" mentality.

A surge in unauthorized US drone attacks in Pakistan along with NATO operations along the border has sparked criticism from Pakistani officials.

Pakistan also strongly condemned violation of its airspace by US-led forces stationed in Afghanistan.

Washington claims the airstrikes target militants, but most of the attacks result in civilian casualties.

The issue of civilian casualties has strained relations between Islamabad and Washington with the Pakistani government.
