  • Bangladesh to produce laptops

Manufacture of low-priced laptops takes off today

The manufacture of low-priced laptops kicks off today in Bangladesh, Telecoms Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said in parliament.

The much-discussed laptops will hit markets by the end of the month, he added.

“I will inaugurate the laptop manufacturing factory [today] and the honourable prime minister will launch marketing of the laptop by the end of this month,” the minister said, in response to queries placed by lawmakers.

Under the country's first initiative to make laptops, the minister said there will be four types of laptop, priced at Tk 10,000, Tk 12, 000, Tk 21,000 and Tk 25,000.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Raju had earlier said the locally made laptops would hit the market by May or June, which would contribute to building a 'Digital Bangladesh'.

The telecoms minister's speech yesterday renewed hopes for the first laptops made in the country.

In response to another query, the minister also informed parliament about the government's steps to turn the 8,500 post offices in Bangladesh into e-centres, by supplying laptops, computers, generators, printers, internet modems, digital cameras, photo-printers and mobile phones.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday emphasised on developing the information technology and imparting training to the youth community to handle the unemployment problem through outsourcing.
She vowed to root out corruption, militancy and all types of terrorism through incorporating modern digital technologies in the administration while inaugurating a three-day Digital Innovation Fair 2011 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre.
Hasina said the government will introduce video conferencing system at offices of the Deputy Commissioners, Divisional Commissioners, Cabinet Division and the Prime Minister to ensure transparency and accountability in the administration.
“Outsourcing can be one of the most effective ways to remove unemployment problem,” she said.
The PM said community e-centre would be set up at every upazila which will open new avenue for the rural people to get the internet services.
Already, five community e-centres have been opened which the interested people, particularly the youth community, can use, she said.
Giving example of some 12-hour time gap between Bangladesh and US, Hasina said local people can make best use of this time gap by outsourcing.
She informed the audience that the much-awaited e-commerce is expected to be introduced by 2012.
Referring to the recently introduced e-book, the PM said the government is thinking to provide such devices to the students so they do not need to carry so many books into their classes.
“They (students) will only carry the device. They will open the e-books and study,” she said, adding long-awaited low cost laptop will soon come to market for public use. The laptops will be available at Tk 12,000, Tk 15,000 and Tk 20,000.
Hasina said to materialise the government's Vision-2021 it has started working to bring 1,000 unions under optical fibre network while infrastructure construction works for providing broadband internet facilities to 56 districts and 57 upazilas will be ended by the current fiscal.
Besides, e-centre for rural community will be set up at 8,500 Union Parishads, she said.
The PM later visited various stalls at the digital fair. A total of 80 institutions under various ministries and departments and 6 private institutions are exhibiting their various e-services and products at the fair.
Tri-dimensional digital aviation map, online agriculture television, mobile SMS-based health services, digital land survey and management, digital holding tax management and online birth-death registration, digital signature, multi-media classrooms, digital content for teachers, education GIS map, mobile banking and many other e-services are being exhibited at the fair.
ICT Ministry, Prime Minister-run Access to Information programme and UNDP has jointly arranged the fair to be continued till tomorrow.
State Minister for ICT Yafes Osman and A2I project director Nazrul Islam Khan, among others, addressed the function.

        The brand new Bangladeshi laptop.

DOEL is the name of the Bangladeshi national bird.

'Doel' to hit market this month

Gazipur, July 8 (bdnews24.com) — 'Doel', one of the four models of cheaper laptop manufactured by state-owned Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS), will hit the market by the end of this month, the telecommunications minister has said.

"The price of Doel will be Tk 12,000," Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju told reporters on Friday.

"Apart from the commoners, school and college students will be able to buy the low-priced laptops," he said after seeing the trial run of the laptop factory at TSS in Gazipur.

"We've planned to export the laptops in the future after meeting the local demand," he added.

On Thursday, the minister told parliament that there would be four models of the laptop priced at Tk 10,000, 12,000, 21,000 and 25,000 which would hit the market later this month after the prime minister's approval.

The efforts to market the laptops had been going on for over two-and-a-half years.

"Now it's a Tk 1.48 billion project. At least 10,000 laptops will be produced here per month. The project can be expanded if TSS gets a larger space for its factory," he told the journalists.

TSS managing director Mohammad Ismail said, "The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Malaysian Thin Film Transistor (TFT) and foreign experts."

He said 60 percent of the laptop parts, including the motherboard, would be manufactured in the factory.

"The factory will initially produce some 200 laptops experimentally," Ismail said.

            1. BUET will be involved in this.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

            2. The production of 10,000 laptops a month is not that big considering that would mean only: 0.12 million a year for a population of around 160 million.

However it is a good start, and these laptops could start being exported afterwards, as labour costs are cheaper in Bangladesh than other parts of east Asia.

However the primary purpose of this project is to increase digitalization of Bangladesh and not the establishment of an indigenous Bangladeshi computer manufacturing industry.

I am sure at the beginning the laptops might be of very cheap prices, which is a very good news to poorer countries who struggle to afford laptops. Chapeau to the Bangalis, you are on fire it seems.

It looks like these laptops could start being exported to other countries. The resultant success of this product will then strengthen the BD computer manufacturing industry and encourage them to expand.

Other big Bangladeshi manufacturers like Walton BD may start to produce their own laptops, desktops in order to gain a share of this market.

Bangladeshi made, mobile phone by Walton BD.
