PESHAWAR: An All Parties Grand Jirga Monday asked the government to review policies in line with the resolutions of the Parliament to restore peace in the tribal areas and end the miseries of the tribesmen.
Held at the Nishtar Hall here, the jirga was attended by a large number of tribal elders. All the political parties had their representation in the moot. Presided over by Provincial Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Prof Mohammad Ibraheem Khan, the jirga was addressed by senior Awami National Party leader Abdul Lateef Afridi, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MNA Akhundzada Chitan, PPP organiser for Fata Malik Waris Khan Afridi, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Anwar Kamal Marwat, Intikhab Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Dr Bashir of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf and others.
All the speakers were unanimous in demanding an immediate end to the US drone attacks, which they said were targetting innocent people. They also demanded the government to implement the Fata reforms announced by President Asif Ali Zardari, abolish the Frontier Crimes Regulation and withdraw the Action in Aid of Civil Power Regulations 2011.
A declaration adopted on the occasion stated that US President Obama had announced timetable for talks with the Afghan people, government and the Taliban and withdrawal of US and Nato troops from Afghanistan instead of the use of force for restoration of peace in the war-torn country. Therefore, the resolution stated that the Pakistan government too should reject the US demands for “do more” and take similar measures for restoration of peace in the tribal belt. The declaration read that owing to lack of access to free media, the extra-judicial killings of thousands of people in the tribal areas were going unnoticed, despite the fact that the incidents taking place in the tribal belt were more serious than the issues of Kharotabad, target killings in Karachi and murder of journalist Saleem Shehzad.
The document stated that the Supreme Court should take suo moto notice of the extra-judicial killings and destruction in tribal areas. “The government should order a judicial commission comprising Supreme Court judges so that the people could be informed of the facts and responsibility could be fixed,” stated the declaration.
It further stated that thousands of innocent people were being killed in the US drone strikes, which was blatant attack on the sovereignty of the country. Therefore, the drone attacks should be immediately stopped, the declaration stressed.
“The forced return of the affected tribal people should be stopped and they should be given relief on the pattern of internally displaced persons of Malakand division. The Political Parties Act should also be extended to the tribal areas so that the tribal people could get their political rights,” the declaration said.
President Zardari should immediately notify reforms in the Frontier Crimes Regulation, the jirga declared. The jirga urged the government to immediately open educational institutions in tribal areas and offer concession in fees to the students hailing from the tribal belt.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Mohammad Ibraheem said the government should immediately announce parting its way with the so-called war against terror being fought under the leadership of USA. The supply route for the Nato troops should be closed forthwith, he added. He said the gap between army and the people has widened, which is neither in the interest of the country nor the army. He was of the opinion that military operation was no solution to any problem. “The US has suffered a humiliating defeat in Afghanistan and it wanted to take revenge of its defeat in Pakistan,” he remarked.
Prof Ibraheem said that the infidel forces wanted to destabilise Pakistan under a well-planned conspiracy to take control of its nuclear arsenal. Latif Afridi said over 70,000 innocent tribal people had been killed in the military operations. He was of the opinion that innocent people were being killed while those involved in unlawful activities were roaming free.
