Three thousand youths from Swat and other parts of Pakistan have been detained, according to Pakistan Defense Minister Ahmad Mukhtar. These youths do not have any legal representation. This may be the government’s response to handling the situation. However, this military solution has led to the declining law and order situation in Pakistan. Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Movement for Justice (Tehreek-e-Insaf) party, wanted to know why the Pakistan government is not letting the detained youth have legal representation.
Imran Khan has demanded a Suo Moto Action by the Pakistan Supreme Court against the Defense Minister to get information from him regarding the detained youth. The Pakistan government’s position regarding these youth are unclear as they have resorted to military only strategy. However, according to a recent report released by Eisenhower Research Project based at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, denying legal access to the detained people have only made the situation worse. The civilians have become the unintended targets between two forces.
Dr. Arif Alvi, the Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, stated “Government does not know which court to try them in and how to prosecute them.” He called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice.
On the release of the report, Imran Khan, the Chairman of the Tehreek-e-Insaf, stated “findings of the Eisenhower Research Project have vindicated the PTI stance that the War on Terror has only brought economic and social destruction.” Imran Khan believes that only a political settlement is the solution to winning the War on Terror. Pakistan will have to change it’s strategy from a military strategy to a political one.
