Several US-led troops die in Afghan war

PressTV - Several US-led troops die in Afghan war

Separate militant attacks and bomb explosions have killed at least seven US-led soldiers in various parts of Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, NATO says.

The Western military alliance says two soldiers were killed in a roadside blast in the west of the country while another died after a bomb went off in the south.

NATO has not revealed the nationalities of the soldiers or the exact location of the incidents.

Four other NATO soldiers were also killed in Afghanistan on Saturday.

Earlier, three of soldiers died in clashes with militants in the country's east. Most soldiers serving in eastern Afghanistan are American.

This while the alliance says another soldier was killed in a militant attack in the south.

At least 2,550 international troops have lost their lives in Afghanistan since the invasion of the country in 2001.

As the US-led forces casualties continue to rise in Afghanistan, public opinion in the United States and other Western countries is increasingly turning against the Afghan war.

The security situation has steadily deteriorated across Afghanistan over the past few years despite the presence of around 150,000 US-led foreign troops in the country.

PressTV - Spanish soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Spain's Defence Minister Carme Chacon appears before her news conference at the headquarters of Spain's Defence Ministry June 26, 2011.
Two Spanish soldiers have been killed and three others injured in Afghanistan as their armored vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device.

Spain's Defense Minister Carme Chacon announced at a press conference that the incident took place on Sunday, some 20 kilometers north of the Qala i Naw city in the northwestern region of Badghia, when the soldiers were conducting a reconnaissance patrol.

The injured soldiers, who suffered from broken bones and bruises, had been taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Bala Murghab. Two of them had to amputate their legs, AFP reported.

Spain currently has some 1,500 troops in the NATO-led military operation in Afghanistan.

However, the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced during a European Union summit in Brussels on Friday that Spain will withdraw 10 percent of its troops from the war torn country by the end of March next year.

A further 40 percent is to be withdrawn by the 2013, and the remaining soldiers are to be pulled out in 2014.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices are by far the most lethal weapon used by Taliban militants against foreign and Afghan troops as well as innocent civilians.

Additionally, the US President Barack Obama also announced earlier this month that by the end of the current year, 10,000 US troops will be pulled out of Afghanistan and another 23,000 of the forces would be withdrawn by the summer of 2012.
