Afghan President Karzai arrives to inaugurate Afghanistan's parliament in Kabul

In response to Obama's announcement of the withdrawal of over 30,000 troops by the end of 2012 Afghan President Hamid Karzai said that Afghan youth were ready to defend their country. The withdrawal would still leave about 68,000 American troops on the ground, as well as thousands more from NATO allies. This would be about the level before Obama's surge.
Karzai said:"The transition of the security and the withdrawal of the foreign troops from Afghanistan means the Afghan forces must be strengthened," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Obama's announcement was "only ... a symbolic step." Mujahid said the U.S., "must take serious steps to stop this pointless bloodshed" in Afghanistan. He said that without a full withdrawal of all international troops, "our armed struggle will increase from day to day.""Obama and his warmongers want to deceive their nation and with this announcement, while in reality, they have no respect for their nation's demands or wanting to bring this war and occupation to an end nor do they want to fulfill their promise," Mujahid claimed that U.S. leaders are "repeatedly giving false hopes ... about ending this war and claiming baselessly about victory and in this way want to extend this war as long as possible." Mujahid noted thatAmerican taxpayers "must realize that, like the previous ten years, their money is still being wasted on this pointless and meaningless war or is still going to the pockets of the officials in the corrupt Kabul regime,""If they do not react now, they will definitely be forced to so in the future in order to release themselves from this crisis."
Mujahid was dismissive of the people training the Afghan police and military, saying, "Afghans see them as thieves and enemies of their nation and religion." Mujahid claims that many in the police and military, "are drug addicts, forced out of their homes, the filth and bad people of society have been gathered for vice, given the mentality to spread vice and assigned for corruption will not reach Afghans any benefit nor will they help the Pentagon or CIA reach their ambitions." Of course just for good measure the Taliban themselves infiltrate both the police and military to help pursue their own agenda.
While the Obama withdrawal is substantial and will save some money no doubt many U.S. troops remain with high costs. Other countries are also starting to withdraw more troops. CanadaCanada's combat role ends this summer but almost a thousand troops will remain to train Afghans.
