  • Second largest gas field found in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan, the holder of the world’s fourth-biggest natural gas
reserves, said its South Yoloten gas field is the world’s second largest
    deposit.

The field covers 4,000 square kilometers (1,500 squaremiles), the Turkmen
state-owned news service said yesterday on its website, citing Gaffney,
Cline & Associates’ preliminaryestimates. The nation plans to invest
about $10 billion to tap the deposit.

Turkmenistan holds 24 trillion cubic meters of discovered gas
reserves, the news service said. Iran’s South Pars gas fieldis the world’s
    largest.

The field can start exporting gas to China in late 2013, Petrofac Ltd.
(PFC), the contractor working at South Yoloten, said in March.
Turkmenistan is also examining plans to export gas to Afghanistan,
    Pakistan, India and Europe.

This is good news for the country as it could be the next Qatar which is the richest country in the world (in terms of per capita income) due to its vast gas reserves. Also it has increasingly been able to export to countries other than just Russsia. It could also have benefits for Afghanistan with more fuel at cheaper costs.

The turkmen government is stable so I think they will be capable of making the country more prosporous.

Although minorities (such as Balochis) are discriminated against, there are some human rights violations & some corruption in the government. But it is gradually becoming better so I think the future for the country is good.
