The German military has admitted to the killing of unarmed civilian demonstrators outside its base in the Afghan province of Takhar, claiming it was an act of self-defense.


The Defense Ministry in Berlin confirmed on Friday that its soldiers deliberately shot several people during a violent protest on Wednesday outside their base in the northern Afghan city of Taloqan, Deutsche Welle reported.

According to the German military, its soldiers initially fired warning shots into the air and then began to fire targeted shots primarily in the leg of demonstrators.

Thousands of Afghan protesters on Wednesday clashed with security forces on the streets of Taloqan city during protests at the ongoing foreign attacks as well as the bombing of a house in the city on Tuesday night, which killed four civilians, including two women.

At least 11 protesters were killed and 50 others left wounded during the fierce fighting on Wednesday.

Demonstrators were rallying in front of the German base in the city to call for an end to the continuous killing of Afghans at the hands of US-led troops in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the German military said the soldiers fired to defend themselves in the altercation that they said killed at least two German soldiers and four Afghan guards.

Civilian casualties have long been a source of friction between the Afghan government and US-led foreign forces.

In May, a US-led airstrike in the eastern province of Kunar claimed the lives of nine children, aged between seven and nine, who were collecting firewood.
