23 die in Karachi target killings.

KARACHI: Violence enveloped the city on Wednesday as a fresh wave of politico-ethnic target killings claimed at least 23 lives. According to reports, the latest bout of violence has prompted the authorities to hand over the task of maintaining law-and-order to the Pakistan Rangers, under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Two young men were shot dead at Abul Hasan Isphani Road on Thursday morning whereas sporadic firing is underway in the area.

Wednesday’s fatalities include activists of the Awami National Party (ANP), the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the Muhajir Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).

The incidents of target killings triggered related violence, which included the torching of buses, forceful closure of markets, the burning of roadside stalls as well as the targeting of police personnel. The entire city was in the grip of tension, with public transport disappearing from the roads by early evening, as reports of the violence began to spread.

Schools and colleges across the city will remain closed on Thursday, while the papers scheduled for the day as a part of the on-going HSC examinations have been postponed. The violence began late Tuesday night when one Nabi Khan, an ANP activist and a mobile phone dealer by profession, was shot dead by armed men in the Shah Faisal Colony area. Later that night, an activist of the MQM, Mohammad Hanif, was shot dead in the same area. Armed men also resorted to firing near Unit-108 office of MQM in Shah Faisal Colony. As a result, Syed Asghar Ali and another MQM activist were injured.

Shah Faisal Town turned into a virtual war-zone, echoing with fire the entire night. The violence first spread to other areas when armed men ransacked a ward office of ANP in Dhoraji Colony, Bahadurabad. A shop, Mukaram Hardware, situated in Block-16 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, was also torched.

On Thursday, an ANP rally that had been taken out to protest against the killing of

Nabi was ambushed by armed assailants near the Lucky Star area, in which the party’s Mehmoodabad ward president was killed.

He has left behind a widow and a son.

Wali Mohammed, 40, a trader, was shot dead in Risala police limits on Tuesday. The deceased was running a shoe shop in the Light House area and was also residing in the same area. He was off-loading a consignment of China-made shoes outside his shop, when armed men riding a motorcycle shot him dead and fled. The deceased was a member of Light House Association and hailed from Quetta.

After the incident, the Light House shopkeepers pulled down shutters and launched a protest on Wednesday morning and demanded the immediate arrest of the killers. Bakht Zada, 35, was shot dead by armed men riding a motorcycle near Daata Nagar in Orangi Town police limits. The deceased was a supporter of ANP and running a cement block shop near his house in Sector-1C, Orangi Town.

Armed men then resorted to aerial firing and forced the shopkeepers to pull down shutters in Empress Market and Electronics Market in Saddar.

The police said that they recovered more than 50 empty bullet shells from the area. A rickshaw driver Anjum Khan, 30, was shot dead by two armed men riding a motorcycle near Chandni Chowk, Paposh. The deceased was said to be an activist of ANP.

Ameen Khan was shot dead by armed motorcycle riders in Quaidabad area, while he was working at D-7 mini-bus stand in Majeed Colony. The deceased was also an activist of ANP. Unidentified armed men ransacked the ANP ward office in Mehmoodabad No-5, while the bullet-riddled body of Shahid Khan, was found lying in a lane opposite Makro in SITE police limits. A local tea hotel owner, Moosa Khan, was shot dead by armed men in Gulberg police limits late Wednesday night.

Police sources said that the deceased was the owner of Quetta Tea hotel situated on Hadi Road. The deceased was present at his shop when two armed men on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire at Khan, killing him on the spot, and fled.

The deceased was residing in Moosa Colony area. Ajab Khan was shot dead by armed men in Sharea Noor Jehan police limits. Police sources said that, the deceased was sitting at a local tea hotel situated near Qalanderia Chowk, when armed men riding on motorcycle shot him and fled. The deceased was an activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Armed men killed three persons in Model Colony police limits. According to the police, the incident took place in the Moinabad area, where unidentified armed men riding on motorcycles opened indiscriminate fire killing three persons on the spot.

They added that, of the three, two were identified as Azizullah Khan and Mohammed Nabi Khan, while the third is unidentified. In yet another case, armed motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire at a general store, injuring a man, Jehangir Khan, and killing his five-year-old son, Hamza, in Landhi police limits. Police sources said that the incident took place in the Khurramabad area.

Unidentified armed men torched three buses in the Sachal Goth area, while a travel agency was torched on Daudpota Road. Syed Haider Ali, 35, Hamza along with Nadeem were killed in Al-Falah police limits. Police sources said that Haider Ali was a resident of Golden Town, Shah Faisal, and on Wednesday night was at Rafay-e-Aam society along with his son Hamza having his motorcycle repaired.

Unidentified armed men opened indiscriminate fire, in which Haider was killed, while his son Hamza was injured. The motorcycle mechanic Nadeem was also killed. The deceased Haider Ali was an activist of Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Fazal Mohammed, 50, was shot dead in the Awami Colony police limits. Police sources said that the deceased was a driver and working at Rehmat Rent-A-Car shop situated in Korangi No-6.

On Wednesday night, while he was on duty, armed men riding on motorcycle shot him and fled. The deceased was a supporter of the ANP. Rana Mohammed Younus, 60, was shot dead in Shah Latif police limits. Police sources said that, the deceased was an activist of the MQM and former councilor of the MQM in Quaidabad.

On Wednesday night, he was present at Murghi Khana, Quaidabad, when armed men riding on a motorcycle shot him and fled. The deceased was the resident of the same area. Late on Wednesday night, two police constables of the Pirabad Police Station, who were on patrol near the Abaseen Hotel, Abdullah College Road, Pirabad, were attacked by unidentified men. The two policemen are said to be in a critical condition at the hospital when this report was filed.

In Risala police limits, Head Constable Mohammad Asad was shot dead near his residence at the Garden Police Lines. Asad, who was posted at the Saddar Town office, was in civvies when he was attacked.

The city situation, remained tense till the filing of this report and the worst affected areas included: Landhi, Quaidabad, Shah Latif, Shahra-e-Noor Jehan, Orangi Town, Peerabad, North Nazimabad, Mehmoodabad, Saddar, Preedy, Risala and SITE, as the armed men kept resorting to aerial firing and forcing the traders to shut businesses.

Basically, here's what happened. A Pashtun was targeted and killed in his shop yesterday. In retaliation, a group of Pashtuns killed an Indian Mohajir.

So the MQM went on a killing-spree, killing at least 10 Pashtuns immediately (rickshaw drivers, teashop owners, etc) all over the city. When the ANP took one of the dead bodies to the governor's house (the governor is an MQM man with murder cases of his own), their procession was attacked by armed MQM thugs and more Pashtuns were killed in the process.

So for their total losses of two, the MQM has managed to kill 20 Pashtuns so far. So the message is clear - Karachi is our city, you're not welcome here but if you do come, you have to live under us or you'll pay.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

You are nobody to call the suffering pashtuns as beghairats. Issueing statements of beghairati infront of PC and in the presence of comfortable air-conditioners for the hardworking labourers is condemneble. Magority of pashtuns in karachi are from labour class who are earning for their families in pakhtunkhwa and balochistan. Their priorities of earning through hard labour in the place distant from their homes make them weak and vulnerable infront of established mohajir community. Dont expect the brawny and giant-like bodies of pashtuns to handle the targeted firing on them from motor cycles.
If you have got guts and the so called ghairat then come to karachi and challenge the MQM ghundas openely.

If so, then where is the ANP worriors andn why havnt the government of Pakhtunkhwa protested strongly about these killings.

Where is the Musulman of Pakistan to rally and condem this haha.

Karachi is a nice reminder of the status of Pashtuns, you should come to Di Khan, and see infront of your eyes how Police beat waziristan idps very hard and force them to sleep outside in the cold.

Pakistan is a fraud, and these killings are a good example of its disadvantages.

What can rangers do? Pashtuns ive met from Karachi even complain that Police and Rangers defend MQM activists. I think Pashtuns and these Mojjahirs from India should give consideration to the poor Native Sindhis who have been systemattically destroyd by mass migration.

                      I feel sorry for them.

‘Ethnic, political’ killings toll rises to 25

KARACHI: As the death toll in the fresh wave of targeted killings carried out on political and ethnic grounds rose to 25 on Thursday, police backed by Rangers rounded up more than 200 suspected criminals with a majority of them belonging to political parties.

The death toll rose in the early hours of Thursday when a 40-year-old activist of the Pakhtoonkhawa Milli Awami Party succumbed to his wounds during treatment at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

“Mohammad Khan and his three friends were sitting at a roadside teashop in Sector 19-D when they were targeted by armed motorcyclists on Wednesday night,” said an official at SITE-A police station. Mohammad Khan was seriously wounded and shifted to the hospital, where he died during treatment within a few hours. The victim was said to be associated with the party’s Baldia chapter.

In an attack near Abul Hasan Ispahani Road, two friends were intercepted by four armed men riding two motorbikes. Both the friends, in their late 20s, were returning home after attending a religious gathering. “Nusrat Ali and Rashid Malik were killed in Bhukkur Goth, an area close to Abul Hasan Ispahani Road,” said an official at the Sachal police station. In a violent reaction to the killing, some youths burnt tyres on the road, the police said, adding that the situation was handled through negotiations with area elders.

In North Karachi, 16-year-old Sajid Khan was on his way home from his friend’s place when unidentified armed men shot him dead near KBR Society in Sector 16-A of Buffer Zone. The Shahrah-i-Noor Jehan police said that the teenager was a resident of F.B Area block 13.

A young watchman, Irfan, was found shot dead early in the morning inside his rented quarter near M.A. Jinnah Road. The victim had suffered two bullet wounds in the chest, an official at the Risala police station. “We think the killing was executed in the middle of the night.”

The body of an unidentified young man clad in a light blue shalwar was found in Surjani Town early in the morning. The body with torture marks visible on it was spotted by some transporters in an open plot close to the bus terminal of route W-18 buses.

“They informed the police about the body. After completing medico-legal formalities at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, the body was shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for want of identification,” said an official at the Surjani Town police station. He said that the victim was strangled to death.

Thirty-two-year-old Bakht Mahmood was killed in Orangi Town No 5 on Thursday evening, said an official of the Orangi Town police station.

                        Suspects held

The police claimed to have succeeded in tracking down suspects involved in the targeted killings that staged a comeback with the killing of an ANP activist on Tuesday night after February 2010. However, the number of arrests made in a single day came as a surprise to many.

“We have arrested more than 600 people and over 200 of them are suspiciously involved in the targeted killings,” the capital city police officer (CCPO) Waseem Ahmed told Dawn. He replied in the affirmative when asked about the political associations of the suspects detained over charges of targeted killings.

“We have arrested them on our own intelligence regardless of their ethnic backgrounds or political associations. But definitely there are number of suspects, who are political activists,” he said.

On Wednesday, the city police chief said the recent wave of targeted killings was carried out on “ethnic and political grounds”.

Rangers given police powers for 30 days

The Singh government on Thursday once again armed the Rangers with police powers to carry out raids and search operations and to arrest suspected criminals.

Effective from Thursday, these special powers are for 30 days. Earlier, such powers were given to the Rangers on Feb 3 and the notification, issued under Section 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, lapsed on May 3.
This decision was taken at a meeting held at the office of the home secretary on Thursday in the wake of the targeted killing of 25 persons in the city.

Presided over by Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, the meeting was also attended by the inspector-general of the Sindh police, the director-general of the Rangers, the home secretary, the AIGs of the Special Branch and CID, the CCPO Karachi, the zonal DIGs of East, West and South, the DIG (HQ) and officials of other law-enforcement agencies.
Speaking to a group of media men after the meeting, the home minister said that so far over 200 suspects had been rounded up.

In reply to a question, the home minister said that criminal elements were involved in the targeted killings, explaining that those who did not have political existence might have a hand in the killings to destabilise the government.

In reply to another question, Dr Mirza said there would have been daily targeted killings if there was no ban on pillion riding.

                        Body to check killings

The meeting unanimously decided to set up a committee consisting of representatives of the police, Rangers and other law-enforcement agencies to check incidents of targeted killing and to arrest elements involved in the incidents.

The committee will chalk out a strategy in the light of the incidents of targeted killing in the past and the investigations made therein. It will pinpoint the areas where police and Rangers are to carry out joint action to curb such incidents.

The home minister directed the police and Rangers to further improve intelligence collection and start an impartial joint action against criminals, anti-state elements from Thursday and ensure timely action by pursuing intelligence information. He directed that police, Rangers and intelligence agencies ensure liaison among themselves to deal with the day-to-day affairs and for immediate action against criminals.

On the occasion, directives were also issued for strict checking at the city’s entry and exit points and snap checking, and it was decided that additional police and Rangers would be deployed at certain places with joint patrolling.

Dr Mirza directed the police, Rangers and other law-enforcement agencies to adopt all possible measures to maintain the writ of law and ensure protection to the life and property of citizens.
