LHC issues notice to PTA on plea to ban Facebook

LAHORE: Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority secretary to reply until Wednesday (today), on a petition seeking a ban on Facebook, which is holding a competition of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Islamic Lawyers Movement filed the petition through Chaudhry Zulfiqar advocate, who stated that a competition was announced on Facebook on April 20 which would continue until May 20, asking all the members of the website to create their caricatures to participate in the competition.

Zulfiqar said under the law no practice against Islam could be allowed in the country. He told the court that the website, having various features against the injunctions of Islam, is banned in various countries. Zulfiqar submitted that there were 45 million users of Facebook in Pakistan, adding that the PTA was responsible for its spread in Pakistan. He said the PTA has already blocked various websites in the country but was reluctant to ban Facebook. He said students and various segments of the society have already started protests in the country, which could be harmful for the public property. He requested the court to issue directions to PTA to put an immediate ban on the use of Facebook in the Pakistan. staff report

Loll this is utter nonsense...banning facebook. Why because some pervs are wasting their time, or it is another outlet for political forums.

Uhmm I know about the draw mohammad day. However that is flawed concept, and I don't buy it for a second. There are many anti-islam sites online, are they going to ban the internet next? Or maybe ban european countries, when they speak against Islam. If they are against that, they should just ban those artists or deactivate it for that day.

Yes deactivate it, but not ban it. I doubt that facebook would really care, as their major user base is in north america and Europe. Like I said I don't buy this argument for facebook banning, I think it has to do with the openness of facebook for alternative forums (i.e. baloch, pashtun, etc).

^ lol you might be right but then again there are all sorts of groups..some pro some anti pakistan

to be honest yara, i think we all who argue on internet do it as a time pass thing without achieving anything useful..the common pashtun, he has too many problems to be bothered by all this politics talk and what not..its what i found when i went back there, i wish we could all divert our energies more positively to rebuilding of our glorious race

Facebook is not that big in Pakistan regardless, The majority choose to use "Orkut" from what I've witnessed and heard.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

You guys in Canada are doing that too.. Muslims of Britain are supposed to be doing the same as well.

I'm not sure what to quite make of it all, if anything more publicity is just being given to the 'artists' and the day itself.. but maybe this boycott is a more sensible way to go about it all.
