  • Bangladesh to build multi-billion Dhaka elevated expressway

PM inaugurates construction work of Dhaka Elevated Expressway tomorrow

Dhaka, Apr 29 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the construction work of the much-talked Dhaka Elevated Expressway tomorrow (Saturday) aiming to reduce traffic congestion in the capital city.

Italian-Thailand Development Public Company Ltd (Ital-Thai Company) has obtained the contract to build the expressway at a cost of Tk 8,703 crore.

Under the contract, Ital-Thai Company will build the expressway from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Kutubkhali on Dhaka-Chittagong highway under public-private partnership (PPP).

The main expressway will be 21-kilometre long though its total length will be 26 kilometers with two link roads. There will be 35 ramps (entry and exit points) on the expressway.

Under the 25-year concession agreement, the concessionaire has to complete the project in three and half years from the date of issuance of the work order. The formal order will be issued soon.

If the contractor fails to complete the work by the stipulated time, it will have to pay a liquidity damage of US$50,000 per day from the day following the deadline.

On the other hand, the government will have to hand over 30 percent of the project land to the company within a maximum period of six months and 35 percent each year in the next two years.

Failing to hand over the land timely, the government will have to pay the company a compensation of US$ 10,000 per day.

In case of delay caused by litigation, both the parties will take the next course through negotiation.

Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) sources said 60 percent of the expressway land is ready while the rest (from Golapbagh to Kutubkhali) will have to be acquired.

The Cabinet has recently approved the draft of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway Project (Land Acquisition Act) 2011, an exclusive law for timely implementation of the plan.

According to the law, people affected by the project will be rehabilitated and provided with compensation.

The first 9-km segment of the expressway from Airport to Tejgaon will require 96 acres of land, of which 18 acres belonging to private owners.

Of the remaining 78 acres, 10 acres belong to the Cantonment Board, four acres to the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and the rest is owned by the Bangladesh Railway (BR).

As per the deal, 50 percent of the construction materials and expertise will be procured from the local market

This is part of the Bangladeshi government's plan of improving the country's infrastructure. This alongside power shortages, which the government is also tackling are the two main things stopping more FDI (foreign direct investment).

Once this is sorted than increased FDI will start pouring in. However even without major FDI, the country is doing well and in the next few years will reach 8% economic growth and keeps on reducing poverty by 10% every 5 years. At current rates the percentage of people below poverty should be close to 1 or 2% by 15 years.

The country is on its way to becoming the next Asian tiger economy, but needs to join ASEAN.

Anyway it must catch up with regional neighbour Vietnam which is the rising economic star of the region.

is the country doing anything about possible natural disasters? from what i understand, its the biggest threat to bangladesh.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
