There has to be an integrated campaign. Stronger education on how wrong it is, making people feel the ones who do it are lowly animals and savages rather than guys who are strong and lording it over a woman....which I suspect is how some rural - but definitely not the majority - Punjabis would see it, or maybe some Saffers (S Africans).

The recent release of Mukhtaran Mai's alleged rapists wasn't encouraging....what was worse was the reaction in a Paki nationalist forum (with lots of pseudo-Islamic twats) when they were very calm and indifferent......these are the same guys that literally talk about launching ICBM missiles against the US, nuking FATA or fencing the "Durrand line" when there is a terrorist attack and go beserk.

it definitely needs education but it has to be done by good role model men. in australia they have an education happening with aboriginal male teenagers, by men, as they have had high rates of violence against women. they are educated to help and stop other men from bad behaviour towards women and that it is not proof of manhood. it is only happening in a small group but they are planning to do more.

I agree that punishments need to be stronger, but with the pakistani system even that isn't happening, e.g. mukhtaran mai's case.

The other thing about the whole Mukhtaran Mai scandal was that it even shocked and outraged Punjabis because even by their standards it was extreme.

The tribe that did this were actually Balochis (there are a lot of them in southern Punjab) originally and Balochi culture is extremely brutal like this, it was some Balochis who buried girls alive a year or two back, with one PPP politician basically supporting what they did.

However any society whether it be blue, black, white, green or whatever faith in which evil like this happens will ultimately be punished.

Civil society needs to be stronger and womens rights need to be promoted. Though many here dislike the ANP - even I have my reservations about them - they are mobilizing women in Pakhtunkhwa.

you were also not there but nobody could give evidence of gang rape though the whole media, govt, police and everyone was supporting mukhtara but still they could not give evidence of gang rape. only one was proved and sentenced.
Courts always give decisions on evidence. courts are impartial.
