    Expo focuses on OIC trade

Products from Indonesia on display at the 13th edition of OIC Expo that opened on Sunday in Sharjah.

Dubai: The UAE's trade with the rest of the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Conference) countries has witnessed tremendous growth in the past five years, and the OIC Expo presents an opportunity to give a further fillip to trade among Islamic countries, according to senior officials attending the show that got under way yesterday at the Expo Centre Sharjah.
The 13th edition of the show was inaugurated by Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

Trade among member countries touched $550 billion (Dh2.01 billion) in 2009 and is expected to rise 20 per cent by 2015.

The UAE has been a key player in intra-OIC trade and the country's trade with member countries comprises 27 per cent of its total foreign trade, Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, said recently.
The UAE's imports from the OIC countries account for 16 per cent of the country's foreign trade, while exports to these countries stood at 36 per cent and re-exports at 56 per cent.

The opening ceremony of the expo was attended by Ahmad Mohammad Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Hussain Al Mahmoudi, SCCI Director General, Saif Mohammad Al Midfa, Director-General of the Expo Centre Sharjah, and officials of OIC countries, government departments, and members of trade associations. The show will conclude on April 29.

    Volume increase
The show is held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

"By hosting the two OIC events, the UAE has shown that it firmly supports all efforts that aim at enhancing social and economic co-operation among OIC member countries and at strengthening the private sector's role in increasing the volume of intra-trade activities and boosting investment in several arenas," said Ahmad Mohammad Al Midfa.

The OIC Expo, which takes place every alternate year, has come to Sharjah for the second time. It was first held in the emirate in 2002.
Though several hundred companies from all OIC member countries and observer states are participating in the OIC Expo, China, Egypt, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Sudan, Thailand and some other countries have a large participation in the show. The show is open from 10am to 8pm on weekdays and from 4 to 8pm on Friday. Entry and parking to the show are free.

    1. OIC intra-trading will just increase and increase, and 7 of the NEXT 11 are Muslim states including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt and Iran. With democratization in the Arab world and the inevitable emergence of Muslim democratic parties in power akin to the AKP in Turkey, intra-Muslim unity and co-operation will increase.

    2. Indonesia is the real shining star of the Muslim world with an economy which is shooting ahead and also a very powerful defence industry.

Bangladesh is way behind Indonesia but if it continues its current progress can catch up and overcome Malaysia and be one of the top 5 or 3 Muslim economies.

    3. Afghanistan's main problem is war but its economy grew by a massive 23% in 2010 and 9% this year and according to one source I read at current rates it would overtake Saudi Arabia by 2050 at current rates of growth. Afghanistan is an important country for the Islamic ummah, historically, culturally and geographically and is the gate to resource-rich central Asia. So we wish our Muslim brothers of Afghanistan well in gaining peace and then prosperity.

economic dependancy between muslim nations which is beneficial to all parties is the only way to eventually realize a caliphate. zeal is not enough, its economics which leads to common interests which will be reinforced by a common islamic culture.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
