Friends of the Animals launches petition to outlaw animal sex, pornography and brothels in Denmark
Animal support organisation Dyrenes Venner (Friends of the Animals) is campaigning for bestiality to be outlawed.
The organisation has placed full page advertisements in tabloid newspapers BT and Ekstra Bladet, as well as Christian newspaper Kristeligt Dagbladet, calling on people to sign a petition in favour of a ban.
The organisation said the introduction of such legislation would send a strong ethical signal to society.
In addition to a ban on sex with animals, Dyrenes Venner also wants to see the legislation cover animal pornography, animal sex shows and animal brothels.
Almost 3000 people have signed the petition in the last week and campaigners hope to attract 100,000 signatures in total.
‘The more signatures we get the more voters will make their voices heard on this issue and influence the [justice] minister and MPs,’ the organisation’s chairman Peter Mollerup told DR News.
Animal welfare spokesperson for the Danish People’s Party Malene Harpsøe has previously tabled a proposal to ban animal sex, but was unable to secure a parliamentary majority for it. She supports the latest campaign.
‘We want to table a decisive proposal on a ban against sex with animals and hope that the many signatures will influence members of parliament,’ she said.
Police were not able to provide details on how many cases of animal abuse have involved bestiality.
